Two Years for The Price of One with The Smile Dental Care Plan

220
CF14005

This scheme could be a great and cheaper alternative or even an 'add-on' to the dental cover you have through your private health insurance.

For an annual membership starting from $77 for singles, you can get a discount of up to 40% on a wide range of dental treatments and procedures with hundreds of participating dentists Australia-wide.

All this is on top of whatever rebates you get through your private health cover.

If you join before the end of August, you can get two years membership for the price of one.

We have written a detailed review of this plan, its potential benefits and what potential issues to look out for and we invite you all to read it for yourself here

  • From their FAQ is it correct that the dental practice has to cover the savings?

    • Aye, it's not a rebate.

  • I have used this mob for the last couple of years (2 year deal) Saved me a fortune as I had to get a bit of work done. Cost of the plan if I remember were covered in the first 2-3 filings. The dentist you use has to be part of the deal as well so make sure you are going to one that is part of this.

Dental practice doesnt cover the saving they just charge you less than their usual prices

    • I Agree. I saved way more than what I paid for smile membership in my first 3 visits which included 4 fillings and cleaning

Don't waste your money, they advertise it as a 40% discount, but actually they have fixed prices that are 40% cheaper than the most expensive market prices. In practice that can save you almost nothing from a dentist charging already reasonable rates (most on Smile do already). Just get private insurance that offer a true % discount (MBP extras are awesome, I have 70% unlimited rebate on general dental).

Strange when I checked around for the dentists near me both north of Brissy and in central they were all charging more than the prices shown on the site.

I am with you on it not being a discount of 40% but it was definitely cheaper for me. Need to compare prices to make sure it is a deal for you though

      • Aye, in particular its a waste of an add-on compared to private insurance, as they already dictate prices to the dentist which are better than Smile half the time. You'll definitely get some savings, but nothing dramatic.

With my private insurance I got 14 fillings and was only $600 out of pocket thanks to my extras (full cost was almost 3k). If you need more than a little work done, Smile won't make it affordable, but extras will.

    • I get 90% unlimited at bupa.dont see me saving anything on this

I get same sort of deal from my helth fund as well but this discounts the price first before it goes to your health fund. Hence your 90% goes that little bit further

        • I cant see it saving me more than 77 and it also limits which dentist you can go to… also have to claim after = pita.

  • Sounds interesting. However my extras are through Bupa and this place doesn't have my local "bupa approved" service.

  • Will this reduce my medicare levies?

I only have private health insurance because it reduces my medicare surcharge levies.

    • Nope.

Two fillings for me will cost $570 at the Dentist I want to go to.
I just called them to see how much of a discount i'll receive using Smile.
    $105 is the amount!
Plus Health Insurance, i'll only be paying $250!
Thank you so much, gonna join up in the next 2-3 days!

"If you join before the end of August, you can get two years membership for the price of one" , I really like this idea, think about to have a try!

  • Looks like if you want to use your insurance and this together your not supposed to show your insurance card to the dentist so no hicaps.

    From the faq

Visit the Smile participating dental practice and present your Smile Card (or Smile Temporary Card/Email) on arrival. Refrain from presenting your insurance card.
After treatment, ensure reception knows you are member of Smile and obtain your dental receipt from reception listing dental items/services performed and tooth/teeth treated. Refrain from presenting your insurance card.
If you can claim, use your dental receipt to claim from your insurance company directly after leaving the practice.
To benefit from Smile and insurance, please ensure you follow the steps correctly as this is your responsibility.

      That sounds very suspect.
Any chance they are encouraging their customers to double dip on the governments tax rebate (ie tax fraud), without telling them that is what they are doing?

Ie smile dental are claiming the rebate themselves… hence the cheaper prices, then telling customers to go claim the rebate.

      Maybe tinfoil hat?
      Maybe not?

Why be so specific about not showing you have health insurance? Covering themselves from a legal point if view? The "we didn't know they had insurance" defence?
      Hmm.

      • There IS no tax rebate on dental.

how many have bought this? im tempted to get this as i got a lot of fillings to get :(

I have taken up the 2 year deal as I am in the same position as you.

What I suggest is to go to the site and 'look for a dentist' to see where the participating dentists are in your area, if there are some. I have the choice of 3 practices nearby, one within 2 km.

Next, look at the 'standard charges' page, these are fixed according to the state in which you live. From this you will see that you will very quickly save the membership fee ($38.50/year), probably on the first visit.

For me, it was a no brainer. You need to way up the information and make a choice, I did a bit of research before deciding. They have been around for several years and the feedback was good so I jumped in. Good luck with your decision, I think it should be easy provided you find a dentist on their list that you like.

    • i bought this- the deal applies to all memberships, not just singles, so i added my parents and my younger sibling for $90 for two years. I've already claimed back the total cost of the membership.
I also just got told that i have 10 impact fillings to fill. urgh

  • Thanks reddog; ill be calling up some of my nearby "smile" dentists and seeing there prices; i really don't like to have to call up just to find out how much their services are… :(

  • I just joined now. Thanks. I got contradicting information when I called up the dentists place on two occasions. First time they told me that a checkup and clean & fluride would normally cost $230 but with smile membership it would be $152. The second time they told me there is just a 10% reduction in cost with smile membership. SO Im not sure what to expect. Will get to know on Wednesday after my appointment.

    • The prices are meant to be fixed, according to Smile. There is a schedule on the site for 'standard' items such as check up, clean etc. but does only vary according to the State in which you live. Dentists that vary from the standard list are to be reported to Smile who will deal with them directly to fix the problem or remove the dentist from the list.

I will be interested in the outcome of your visit.

For the benefit of fellow OzBargainers :)
My first appointment was check up, cleaning and fluoride treatment which cost $180 (normally $230). After that had a few dental fillings which cost between $130 to $157 depending on the cavity.
