Let's talk Seedboxes - which is the OzBargain favorite?

I found this:

But of course I want the Ozbargain perspective before making a decision!
I only need 100-150gb per month d/l and not fussed about speeds as I'm stuck on ADSL2+ which will surely be the bottleneck regardless.

Cheers!

it's probably cheaper to pay for 1 internet connection.
I don't fully get why you'd want to pay for the bandwidth twice.

Most torrentbox providers are in jurisdictions where the authorities don't/can't/won't chase up piracy or copyright actions. This solution offers all the privacy benefits of using a VPN with all of the speed and power advantages of palming off the work to a datacentre.

    • It can be cheaper to just download everything in Aus, or it can be more expensive. It depends where you are getting your files from, and are you sharing (keeping a good ratio).

  • Slightly off topic and I have very little idea how seedboxes work, but could you theoretically link a plex media server to the movie files on your seedbox, and take advantage of the upload speeds to share the media library with friends? Or do seedboxes not give that level of access to the files on it?

Any other solutions for sharing a Plex media server if your home internet connection has a shitty upload speed???

    Hanging out for NBN… :/

    • I use a seed box, to just seed. If I want something then I grab the file(s), and play them locally.

Have you looked into getting low spec'd VPS? This can be used as a seedbox and will easily meet your posted requirements (bandwidth and speed) however the limited disk space on the VPS may be an issue (for you) on these cheap plans. Not such a problem though if you purge.

Cheap hosts can be found on LowEndBox. Plenty of plans ranging from ~$4 to $15 USD a year (these prices are usually servers hosted in the US).

When selecting a hosting provider it may be a good idea to read the providers ToS and usage policies. Try to find one suited to your needs. You may come across providers that are more lenient and will turn a blind eye as long as you don't disrupt the servers performance.

A VPS is a cheap solution however you will need to learn how to use Linux (plenty of tutorials), a great benefit for getting a VPS is there are many applicable uses for it while still being able to run it as a seedbox.

  • I use ovh they are dedicated boxes from 5euros a month, with a 500gb disk.

I also run other things on it, but it is my seed box, and anything that might effect, or be effected by torrents I keep off it.

  • Noob here. What is a seedbox?

  • Or you could move to usenet.

  • I personally think VPN is easier
