Telstra prepaid USB modem recharge/usage

Hi Folks,

So, got my mum a Telstra prepaid USB modem in late May. Activated then ((before the July changes) and used up the first month. I was hoping they might have had a discount on recharges, eg 10% off or something, but hadn't seen any, so bought the 12gb 365 day expiry online last week for $180.00 (shows in her account)

I didn't check the usage in that first month, so not sure how it went, but now in this recharge, it has put $180 credit, then it's using up data and charging it as well - except for the first few days it didn't charge. It's weird. I was just expecting that the $180 buys the 12gb data, then the data just get's used up, but this kind of seems like the new plan changes after 1 July?

So my question - is that normal usage for old plan? http://i62.tinypic.com/2j4dqfd.jpg

Also, the "usage" in the Telstra account only shows the total per day. Is there a way to see further details for each day/time log?

I'm wanting to check as it sems to be going pretty quick. I expected a bit of usage in the first few days where it might have done program updates, but she's just checking e-mails and FB, not downloading movies (that i know of! :-)

I know there is (or should be) the Credit2 tricks, but just wanted something simple for my mum.
She's in a country area where Telstra gives the best receiption (unfortunately!)

  • seems ok to me.

Probably the main things that would use up bandwidth

    • automatic updates (particularly service packs)
    • browser updates
    • software updates (java, flash etc)
    • Facebook autoplay videos, and youtube.
    • Skype video-video

Stopping updates has it's own risks, but can be mitigated if its joining to another WiFi occasionally where you do allow updates. Doesn't hurt to remove all unnecessary software too, and disable automatic updates for most things that wouldn't be a security risk.

    • Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I figured it would be a lot going on auto updates. Don't think she's on youtube or Skype, but will double check.

My main question was on the way the $180 recharge value and 12 gb data is being charged - and how come the first three days there was no "cost"? (see tiny pic link above)

Just figured under the old plan it was 12gb and that was it - it would just got used up, no cost involved.

      • Maybe you get 400mb free on purchase of a dongle? Could be an error…

  • get her to turn off the modem when not in use. also you can visit m.telstra.com.au whilst connected and see the usage there to give the total and balance.

    • Cheers.
