New ADSL 2+ plan suggestions please

Hi guys…

Expecting a great advice from you guys..since been on ozb for more than 3+ yrs…

I just moved houses in Brissy from Sandgate to northgate… At my old place my flatmate already had installed Optus cable ages ago and since we moved from a house to a townhouse we asked Optus to transfer our current contract to ADSl but for some reason they are unable to do it were asking us to go on NBN wireless which I am not a big fan off…

Anyhow so now I have got them to cancel the contract as they can't provide me the service(excited for getting out from Optus) But now i have a new melodrama of to connect new HP line and internet which has no contract. The only cheapest option I could see at this stage is Club Telco for $66.50 + $50 annual membership. They do not mention about any new hp line charges on the website. I did check DODO there connection charges are $99 and most of them along the same lines. I have used club telco previously but can't remember if they charged me any connection fees 2 years ago.

Is there anyother provider with nice cheap/reliable internet? I don't use the HP at all, just need unlimited/500gb internet on ADSL2+

Please help.. Need to connect ASAP

    • HP = Home phone. TMAWTFIO

TMAWTFIO = Took me a while to figure it out.

I'm using TPG, the old Unlimited plan for $59 which includes line rental, now it is reworked into a similar plan called "ADSL Standalone", and you get unlimited quota for $60 a month.

For Naked (no line rental) you pay $60 for 200GB. Not as attractive.

      Heres a list of plans
      http://www.tpg.com.au/products

Set up fee is $60 dollars which is as cheap as you can get really. Sign up to a 18 month contract and you can waive the setup fee.

      • ^This. I too use TPG unlimited bundle ADSL2+ with Home Phone (or HP?!!) for 60$ per month, been a happy customer.

Note that the setup fee is $99.95 for 6 month contract or $79.95 for 18 month contract. So it will add with $20 Home Phone Prepayment plus 1st month's bill of 60$, when you sign the contract.

    • Just a question in regards to Exetel.

In my area, the only ISP for ADSL2+ is Telstra which we are forced to use ($99 a month not incl. phone rental -_-)

I have been meaning to change and when i called Exetel, they said that because they use Telstra equipment (basically a reseller of services), they are able to transfer me and still have ADSL2+. Does anyone know if that is true?

I've had TPG say they can do ADSL2+ in the past only to turn out they were wrong and we had to resign a 24month contract with Telstra.

      • How did you know TPG could not deliver ADSL 2+? All of the ISP's use Telstra equipment, like what you said as they work as resellers.

        • Well, this happened 2 years ago.

They (TPG) claimed that they could offer ADSL2+ to us but had to get us to cancel our subscription to Telstra first and then go back to them. We followed their advice and when we ask for ADSL2+ connection to our home after we had cancelled the Telstra subscription, they told us that they were unable to provide ADSL2+ and instead could only provide ADSL.

        • @ProjectZero: If I had to guess I would say if an exchange has 2000 ADSL2+ ports or so maybe 1000 of those would be "wholesale". Say all the wholesale ADSL2+ ports are taken, that would mean Telstra still have ADSL2+ ports but other resellers don't. That's my best guess anyway. I wouldn't be phased by ADSL1, it's fast enough for me and more stable which is a plus. I prefer ADSL2+ but that's only because I love to download.

BTW I've had 2 connections with Exetel, on the first one I was super scared I would get dropouts, etc. But it all turned out great with cheap, reliable service, with good customer service. You get extras as well like a static IP (great for hosting services like voice chat for friends, game servers, etc).

The main reason anyone goes with Telstra is end to end service, that means your ISP can't point the finger at Telstra infrastructure and Telstra infrastructure can't point finger at ISP with both saying it's the other guys fault with you stuck in the middle. The other plus is 24hour support (even if it is with people only reading through a troubleshooting sheet instead of having experience/knowledge).

If I had the money, I'd probably go with Telstra, If I was going to pick any other reseller, it would Exetel for sure.

    • currently with exetel also, the connection does slow down from time to time but its cheap & great.

You'll likely have to pay a connection fee (ranging anywhere from $99-300) no matter who the ISP is if the line wasn't previously active before you moved in.

I'd be worried that the reason Optus couldn't transfer you is because you're on a RIM or similar, so either can't get ADSL at all or can only buy resold Telstra services (which Optus don't offer?).
If that's the case, Exetel will be the cheapest offering (and you can largely ignore the Whirlpool whining, cause they're predominantly about Exetel services over Optus hardware.)

  • My partner lives in Kallangur and I got her onto IINet's Naked ADSL $59.95 plan - right now there is no set-up for 24 month plan.

They do not rely on Optus like TPG does.

      ??
      TPG have their own DSLAMs..

      • TPG have their own DSLAMs in a very limited part of major cities in the south eastern part of Australia. How do you think everyone else that connects with TPG gets interwebs?

    Thanks guys….

finally will be looking to go with club telco tomorrow as there setup fee is $50annual membership +$59 landline activation thereafter monthly charge of $66.50 will give me unlimited internet with no contract. + everytime I recommend someone both of us get $25 credit.

Checked DODO - $59 landline activation + $99 activation fee and monthly $63.50 with unltd internet.

Any other suggestions please let me know.

  • I also need a no contract no home phone option. Moving into a new place but won't be there for too long so don't want to locked in. Will look at Club Telco.

  • Hey check out my forum, it is really good, it will help you out so much! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/157306

  • Try to check ACTIV8ME for adsl2 services. For me having a large telco company in the area might give you line congestion and throttled speed. Better check Whirlpool for ISP / RSP review.
