  • That title. I had to read it 3 times before I could understand what you meant.

    What specs are your baseline?

    • title changed, 3rd or 4th gen cpu
4GB ram, above or 8 would be better,
      decent gpu, 500 GB+ HDD

Have you had a look at the Dell Factory Outlet? You can get a reasonable Alienware for around $1000 if gaming is important.

Edit: Just saw the $1000 ones are gone.

          actually looks great, thanks!
will buy one from them. :D

        • I don't want to say don't buy them because they don't suit you. But I will say if you want a Dell laptop, go for the Latitude series, it's built sturdier than the Inspiron series and you're not paying for the marketing of Alienware/XPS.

XPS do have a more sleek look and you get things like aluminium chassis, 1080p even as low as 12.5", longer battery life, etc.

In the end I guess it comes down to what you want, but I think Alienware laptops are just over-marketed/over-priced XPS laptops aimed at gamers i.e. LED lights, logos, bright colours, etc.

If that excites you go for it, but I tend to just look at my screen and hide my abomination of a PC under my desk and just make sure it's got what's needed inside the side panel.

        • @voolish:

I agree about the marketing hype with Alienware, but if you want a laptop for gaming, it is better to go for that then the latitude when you compare price in the DFO.

I am a big fan of the latitude and have bought a few for work, but I don't think they beat the 'bang for buck' test if you want a gaming laptop. Great business grade laptops though.

oh no, i aint buying a alienware,

im getting the Dell Inspiron 15R

Im in a similar position, but my needs are a little different. I wanted a strong gaming laptop still with decent battery and portable.

I ended up going the 13.3" W230SS. I originally thought the Lenovo Y50 but the battery is short, it's heavy, and had to be ordered via a freight forwarder in the USA).

This blog is great (solid advice too if you post)

  • get something with i5 and 4gb ram and your set, shouldn't be a problem with that budget
