HELP! MacBook Air water damage

So my friend found a puddle of water in her bag (didn't know how it got there) and unfortunately her almost new 11 inch MBA (bought from DSE clearance sale of 2013 models over a month ago) got wet 2 days ago. It won't turn on. Water damage isn't covered by warranty and Apple said it will cost $800+ to fix (which was more than she paid for lol). The credit card she paid with doesn't have insurance, she doesn't have home and contents insurance either. She's prepared to buy a new one, but I just think it's a waste of technology that's barely a month old. Has anyone been in this situation? What to do with a water damaged MacBook Air from more than 2 days ago?

  • put it in rice and leave for 24 hours,
remove all components, eg. battery, HDD, RAM… etc

    • what he said, at least it works with Iphone

    • Good luck removing anything from a macbook air, everything is soldered and glued in. The battery is glued to the case.

    • put it in rice and leave for 24 hours

Asians get attracted to the smell of rice and come to your house overnight and fix your laptop

      • i think rice absorbing water is a myth. i think all it will do is make a mess. but certainly leave it turned off and let it dry thoroughly before doing anything

  • Is your friend in Sydney? Tell her it will have good chance to get it fixed with $300-$400 depends on how bad the lappy damaged.

    • Yep she's in sydney. Where abouts to get it fixed you reckon?

  • Try the rice then offload it onto the bay. Use the funds to get a new one

  • I had this happen, the water eroded something inside of the laptop and basically it always went to sleep.
I ended up selling it on eBay for $500 and buying a new one.

  • Probably sell it for a better price on Gumtree and avoid Ebay fees. Otherwise if you're feeling ambitious, pick up a litre of 99% isopropyl alcohol and look up the exact macbook air on ifixit, tear it down and soak the motherboard in the isopropyl alcohol for an hour… take it out and let it dry for a day somewhere ventilated and then give it a shot… has worked a few times for me ;)

  • It may be able to have all the corrosion/liquid removed by a service centre (Apple won't do it, but some ASP will), generally if it enters through the top case you'll have to replace it also.

But there are no promises that they can get it all and problems may occur after.

I'd agree that your easiest/cheapest option would be to sell it.

The Apple answer is to throw it in the bin and buy a new Macbook Pro for $3K.
