JetStar Flights to Honolulu during Hurricane Iselle and Julio

Dear OzBargainers,

We are flying in to Honolulu on 23rd of August and have already paid for the return flight tickets from Sydney (over $2200)

I am very concerned about flying in because of the coming hurricanes.

Our insurance (TID) will not cover the flights unless they have a written statement from the airline (Jetstar) that the flights has been cancelled.

Called Jetstar and they have no idea about the hurricanes and will not refund the money.

Could you please advice what we can do.

Thank you.

Poor form for Jetstar to say they do not know of the hurricanes.
But the hurricanes are expected this weekend and over next 7 days.
Your flight is over 2 weeks away.

Most hurricanes last a few days or even few hours.
I doubt this one will last 2 weeks.

FYI even hawaii airlines is only allowing changes to flights this weekend, not further ahead

    • i dont understand why you are worried now ?.
its hurricane season for them same time every year is it not ?
how does jetstar know if they are not going to fly on the 23rd or not ? why would they issue a refund when you booked in hurricane season , and they indeed may fly out ?
how do you expect to get cancellation information when the flight is still so far out…

if i was jet star , i wouldnt refund your money this early either…

  • United, Hawaaian, and American customers can change their reservations up to Aug 12 for free. Don't see any statements from Qantas or Jetstar.

  • The hurricanes are touching down now and all major airlines for the exception of Qantas/Jetstar have made blanket cancellations or some kind of announcement. Looks they are still playing it flight by flight.

The 4:30PM JQ1 Flight from Melbourne to Honolulu is flying as scheduled.
The 6PM JQ3 Sydney to Honolulu flight is canceled.

All future flights are still scheduled to fly.

They must have some accurate weather forecasters working for the airline.

    • Thanks for posting - I am keeping watch of this as well…

  • Hmm, OK, looks like Jetstar & Qantas hedged their bets correctly. 1st storm downgraded to tropical storm, minor damage to the big Island. Other storm will pass north of the islands.

  • Ironic, almost to the day, 4 years ago

Wonder how Jetstar will handle this hurricane?

  • Airlines only make their assessments on the day - barring absolute knowns

Don’t be surprised if they can’t tell you even he day before

    Sucks - but that’s life
