Description of Amplifier
The Topping TP23 is a high performance T-AMP based on the Tripath TA2021B amplifier chip. The TP23 is the perfect companion to your Voll B44 speakers for use with a PC or Mac desktop or laptop. The TP23 has an integrated USB DAC that dramatically reduces noise and interference and allows the amplifier to turn off when the computer is off or in standby.

  • Hi Chief. Question - How does the DAC compare to something like this? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/200798785013?ssPageName=STRK:MEWA… And can it be used as a DAC preamp then into a stereo amplifier or are the bindings only to speakers?

    • +3

The TP23 doesn't have any line out functionality - it's only really useful for one purpose and that's connecting to your computer (or raspberry pi etc..) via usb and powering bookshelf speakers (or other similarly sized passive speakers).

The DAC inside is the PCM2704 which is a fairly low cost chip but it performs quite well and gets good reviews. It will be a decent step up for most people from stock motherboard or laptop sound cards - I use a TP23 at my desk and it's been great you can crank it up to full volume and you need to put your ear right next to the speaker to hear any noise at all.

I can't really compare to the DAC you linked - that DAC has optical/coaxial inputs and the DAC in the TP23 is USB so I'm not sure there'd be very many direct comparisons.

I do have a TDA1543 based DAC sitting on my desk but it's a much cheaper one than the one you linked and it's complete rubbish in my opinion, that's probably not a reflection on the TDA1543 chip but more the manufacturer that built the DAC (muse).

Well, that DAC you linked to is a horrible non oversampling DAC (that means that it has tons of horrible aliasing).
Just about anything will be better.

Comments seem positive and they tend to sell like hotcakes, so any specific reason you don't rate a NOS DAC highly?

  • Any plan on stocking the TP-60?

    • No plans at this stage - It's an awesome amp but I am not sure how popular it would be. It's definitely something we would be able to special order but it really would depend on when we put in the order for our next container. If you are happy to wait feel free to email [email protected] to register your interest and we can contact you when we put in our next order with topping to see if you are still interested. It would be a long wait but we would be able to do the best price available. Obviously you could buy it elsewhere and get it much sooner. We have a couple of people that have done this with the TP32EX.

      • Hey,

I'm in no hurry at all, but I don't really need it either. I could be persuaded if you could give me a nice price :)

  • I have some unused satellite speakers off a surround sound package, and I want a little amp to power them as mains for my computer. But I have no need for any sort of high quality audio or high power outputs (I'd use my proper amp in the loungeroom for that), I just need something to get the job done. Anything in the extreme budget range?

    • +4

For the extreme budget range I would recommend the Lepai LP-2020a. Quite common on ebay: http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l131…

It's a really great amp for the price but the build quality is quite questionable.

      • cheers. I've been looking at those on and off. Just need to make sure I grab one with an Aussie power pack (or at least a 220-240v one I can throw an adapter on).

        • Just buy a 12v 2-3 amp transformer.. plenty on ebay. Dicksmith ( OVER PRICED) ect. If you're like me I found a spare that was lying around the house that belonged to something else that has long being gone.

Anyway the 2020 lepai works fine for computer duties at my house.

        • @cozmo: Actually mine is the Lepai 808 model… works fine and am going to buy another for another computer setup.

        • n00b question. Would this adapter work for the Lepai LP-2020a?

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/100-240V-To-12V-2A-3A-5A-6A-8A-10…

If not, can you recommend/link off eBay the cheapest transformer/adapter that I will need?

        • @songnari:

I just got this 2020 which has a transformer

          http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/231256823495?nav=SEARCH

Its a US plug so will need an adapter. Or from the link you had the 2A 24Watt is what your after.

  • how do i get the extra $10 discount if i get this and a pair of the B44s?

    • When you add both the B44 and TP23 to your cart the extra $10 discount will be applied automatically - just remember to add the coupon code "10offtp23" to get the full $20 off.

Considering this is a simple amp with no real other useful functionality not sure why people would pay $100

    Sucker born everyday I guess

    • Everyone has a different view about what is good value and what isn't. Sure this might not be for you but those who buy it certainly aren't suckers.

      A couple of points:
-It's the cheapest Topping TP23 available in Australia right now.
-It includes an integrated USB DAC which would cost you a minimum of $30 separately and then you'd need a $5 cable to go from the DAC to the amp.

If the sound card in your PC or laptop sucks (most do) and you want to connect passive speakers to your computer I don't think you will find much for cheaper than this and certainly not at the quality/standard of Topping amps.

  • +2

I'm interested in getting a AMP/USB DAC which is also a headphone amp as well. Looking at the Topping website and they have VX1 which seems to fit the bill and is priced quite nicely. I understand you have mentioned TP32EX a few times, but it's nearly double the price of VX1 and seems to be a bit overkill if I only want an extra headphone out?

Would the VX1 work well with the B44? Any plans to bring them in?

    • +1

The VX1 looks good and is definitely something we will consider bringing in with the next shipment. I agree it would tick a lot of boxes for people.

Can't really say when the next shipment will be - it depends on how well we do with our current stock so if you would rather get it sooner then sourcing it from elsewhere might be the best way to go.

The VX1 will work well with the B44.
