    Great deal. Pity there's no AFL offer. Thanks donga.

  • NRL crowd numbers down that much, eh? ;)

  • +1

    Lol, NRL are in trouble.. Crowds have been terrible! 1v2 in the afl got 65k, in the nrl it got 26k between two sydney sides.. Not good.

    • not as much as Union is, apparently most people on the street struggle to name 3 current wallaby players lol

      • +3

        I know Israel Folau, lol.

        • yeah.. Isreal Folau, that captain dude and uh.. that strong big bald looking dude, that's 3?

        • +3

          @leekatdel:

          Easy. Israel Folau, Matt Rogers and Wendell Sailor.

        • all ex nrl players at one stage. :)

      Why does it matter how many tickets AFL sold to their games or the ratings on tv? I watched an NRL game yesterday and an AFL game today. I even watched some mma, basketball and soccer earlier this year. None of those other sports prevented me from watching NRL.

      • Tickets/TV ratings all result in revenue for the league, which in turn results in money for the clubs.

        The more money the league has overall, the higher the salary cap to pay players higher amounts, and on more of a club level the better the facilities / coaches etc.

        Crowd numbers do seem small for nrl vs afl crowds at a lot of the games, and gate revenue is important as that is a more direct flow of $ to the club.

        Nrl (and even more so arl) faces the problem that if players feel they are underpaid for their talents then there are a number of countries were they can achieve a higher income (england/France etc).

        So I guess in the short term it doesn't matter to you what the ratings or crowd sizes are, but it has a long term effect and if it continues, clubs may fold or merge.

        • My point was that it doesn't need to be a competition with the AFL. They should just be focused on selling more tickets and higher ratings irrespective of whatever is happening in the AFL.

    Yeah the NRL are in so much trouble. Dominating TV ratings. Biggest sport in Australia.

    • -2

      Sorry, but where exactly is it dominating in the ratings?

      • The Holden State of Origin match at ANZ Stadium last night is the highest rating Origin match on record.

        And it is the highest rating television show so far this year – eclipsing Origin I which was the previous top-rating show of 2014.

        A total 4.193 million viewers watched the NSW Blues break Queensland’s eight-year Origin reign on Channel 9.

        This is on top of the 83,421 fans who watched the game live at ANZ Stadium.

        The huge television audience included:

        • A total metropolitan audience of 2.70 million viewers;
        • A 20 per cent increase in the Sydney audience (1.20 million) compared with the same game last year;
        • The second highest regional State of Origin audience ever (1.49 million average);
        • The biggest Origin audience on record in Perth (121,000) and an average of 420,000 viewers in Melbourne
        More than 8 million unique people tuned into official NRL, Qld and NSW Facebook page content for Origin II in a single day. Origin II set new NRL Facebook and Twitter records.

        NRL Head of Commercial, Mr Paul Kind, said State of Origin is the best sporting brand in Australia.

        He said Origin programs had taken the top three spots in the ratings last night with the pre-game and post-game segments also attracting huge audiences of more than 1.2 million each.

        “State of Origin is bigger than it has ever been,” he said.

        • 1 match from how many week in week out and still not as big as each years afl grand final?

        • State of Origin and NRL Grand Finals smash all other TV ratings. State of Origin is 3 matches by the way.

        • @mxlegend99:

          I know it's 3 matches, but in case you didn't read the 'copy and paste' you posted, it was 1 match in question.

          As the afl grand final is still to come this year, some figures from last years (which is lower than the year before, as Sydney weren't competing):

          2.717 million metro viewers average, peaking with 3.289 million metro viewers and 4.5 million nationally.

          http://www.theaustralian.com.au/media/afl-final-a-ratings-su…

          That's on top of the 100,007 fans who watched the game live at the MCG

    Does this include the grand final? I'd possibly consider the deal then. Not meaning to be ignorant, but is AFL really that popular in the rest of Australia? I know it is in Melbourne, but I'm From Sydney where there are plenty of NRL teams.

    • general admission and regular season only…

    • Unfortunately not…

      1. Tickets will admit the holder to General Admission areas at regular season NRL matches during August, 2014 only and
        does not permit access to the 2014 NRL Final Series and Grand Final.

      I fondly remember going to the Broncos v Storm grand final a few years ago for only $9 per ticket. Scalpers buy up big when tickets are released in the hope that a Sydney team (or two) will be in the grand final and they can make a profit. They got unlucky that year. Not a great chance of that happening this year.

      Outside of NSW, yes AFL is dominating.

      • -2

        Really? How is AFL going in the USA?
        Germany?
        Iran?
        Brazil?
        Indonesia?
        India?
        China?

        • You sir, are an idiot. Even my mentioning of 'outside of NSW' would give context that I mean the australian region and not worldwide.

          Even without it, anyone with a tiny bit of thought would come to the same conclusion.

    Interesting how we can have AFL ticket giveaways on OzB and no-one bats an eye, but a deal like this happens and look at the insecure fans of a particular sport come out of the woodwork.

    • That's what happens when only one country on the planet plays "the greatest game on earth".

      • Upvoted you back to neutral just to say thanks for proving the point.

        • " x2

        Australia isn't allowed to participate in the Australian Football International Cup because we play the sport professionally, ironically Ireland is the most successful country in these tournaments.. The same country we struggle to beat in the International Series. A little knowledge fellas…

  • I purchased over $20 of NRL baby clothes online on Thursday (7th Aug). How do I now redeem the tickets? Couldn't see instructions in the T&Cs. Thanks

  • +1

    Personally I'm a round ball football fan myself, however, this is a great deal. I picked up some tat for $20 + $10 postage and got two tickets to a match worth $40 each. Not been to the NRL before - being based in Melb. Also got free tickets for the AFL a few weeks back. Great find op. Australia is a top place for watching sports of any description.

  • …as for comparing numbers, are there 7-10 games of afl played every weekend like NRL…

    • Yes, this week 8 NRL and 9 AFL.
