Email from PayPal - Too many claims WTF?

Here is a email I just got from paypal, 5 claims in the last 180 days, one they actioned. Has anyone else seen one of these before?

Dear XXX,

During a recent review of your PayPal account, we’ve noticed you’ve had a higher number of claims with your transactions. This could include claims you’ve initiated with PayPal or through your bank.

We may need to exclude you from PayPal’s Buyer Protection Policy if we continue to notice an excessive or unreasonable number of claims, reversals or chargebacks with your transactions. Pending further review, we may also deny any open and future claims.

We want to give you a chance to review your account activity. You don’t need to take any action and we don’t require a response to this message.

You can find additional information and tips about buying and selling safely by clicking Security at the bottom of any PayPal page. If you have any questions, you can also call us by clicking on Contact Us at the bottom of any page.

Sincerely,

PayPal

Seems legit. How dare you expect to be protected as a buyer under their "Buyer Protection" policy - that's crazy talk!

But seriously - how many claims are we talking about? I take it you buy very regularly and have had your share of items go missing or not as described.

5 claims in the past 180 days, 1 claim they actioned ($2.95)

Problem with paypal, if I was some old lady or someone new to online ordering or paypal, this would discourage me from making legitimate claims. Which would leave the purchaser out of pocket. This is unethical! Its not just an oversight on how they worded the email. You can see it is carefully worded.

I have used paypal for over 10 years and this does not discourage me making a claim, but it discourages use of their services and as of now, it will be easier to claim through stgeorge and will make direct CC payments where possible.

Here is my reply to them:
    Dear Paypal,

During a recent review of your company, we’ve noticed you’ve had a higher number of claims with your transactions.

Of the 5 cases in the last 180 days, you only actioned 1 transaction for $2.95, I had to do my own resolution for the rest. If it wasn't for the sellers good ethics, I would be out of pocket.

We may need to exclude you from our standard payment Policy if we continue to notice an excessive or unreasonable number of claims left without action. Pending further review, we may also deny any open and future use.

We understand that it is the nature of the business to have a high number of individuals making claims and to email your customers Re: this matter it is not their fault. Really how can one reduce this more then they have already?

As a long time user of paypal (personal and business) we are well aware of how to reduce the risk of online purchases, should paypal come up with any new or innovating ways feel free to contact me

TL:DR, door swings both ways buddy, right back at ya. Etc

    Sincerely,

  • I'd suggest opening another paypal account.

A friend of mine has his account cancelled, because of this.

He filed a few claims, all he won, and they cancelled his account.

He spends $3,000 a month on ebay.

    There was no explanation delivered.

    5 claims in 6 months is alot….

    • I've been on Paypal for well over a decade and I don't think I've made that many yet.

Perhaps you should be more careful with selecting sellers, to reduce the chance of having to open a dispute.

    • Sometimes it's just bad luck though

I've seen a few comments along the lines…

"I think this is dodgy but I'll buy it anyways and lodge a claim if there's dramas."

        • Exactly, the number of people who thought they could get an iPhone 5 for $99 on eBay with (0) seller feedback are dreaming, deff not bad luck.

        • Well no, that's just plain stupid.

without knowing the full story, it almost seems as if Paypal is your first point of contact when a purchase goes south. Maybe consider contacting and resolving with the seller before taking PayPal into it. This would also be the reason why 4/5 of your claims were unsuccessful

Your letter was a waste of time as everyday customers are considered to be nothing but an inconvenience to ebay and paypal.

They are only concerned about boosting their (insane) income and therefore focus on high volume customers. Even dealers pushing known dodgy products are treated with kid gloves if they are high volume.

They are merciless, shop or sell there with much caution.

  • OP, I suggest you call them instead of writing them an email. You can escalate it further and quicker with a phone call.

I can't even use my Paypal outside of Australia now. I gave them a call, verified everything and they still won't budge. Basically you can only use your Paypal in the country you created it.

    • rather be safe and protected, than sorry. There's ways of buying internationally, but with so much fraud about, PayPal have gone stricter (which i am fine with because i find other avenues). Like i couldn't buy off Lids.com because the credit card linked to my paypal had an Australian address, not US.

I'm glad there's some limit on the number of times people can scam sellers.

  • I've had 4 claims in the last month but previously never had one before that.
Was all to do with the Gearbest stuff plus an ebay order that went wrong.

    Never had one before that.

    Can just be unlucky!

    Haven't got that email yet…

I just did a quick search of my Paypal history. From August 2012 - Current (2 years) I have made 20 claims which is about the same as your averaging. I have never received such emails or warnings from them. In the last year i have made only 5 claims. So from 2012-2013 i would have made 15 claims without any threats.

I wouldn't worry about it to much. Are you sure the email was actually sent from Paypal?

  • How much selling fee do you pay to ebay a month?
