$30 off Amazon order if signing up to Amazon rewards VISA card - too good to be true?

hi all
long time lurker/time killer on the forums.

i was on amazon, been wanting to buy something for a while, and this comes up

basically, sign up, get $30 off, and i suppose like all credit cards, pay it off and cancel

too good to be true? (i figure it must be, otherwise it would already be on ozbargain) :)

thoughts?

    Presumably only for USA customers?

  • us address?

  • I presume you need a social security number to apply for a credit card in the USA. Not something many of us have!

Even if the deal is available in Australia, or you're somehow eligible for the deal, it will be unwise to apply for thousands of credit just to save $30. Additionally, applying (whether or not you're successful) for a credit card will leave a record on your credit record. It's not necessary good or bad if you don't do it often, but it's something that you'll need to be mindful of.

  • Chase is an American bank, so you can only get the deal if you have SSN.
