Panasonic Toughbook or alternative

My work has asked me to find a replacement for our panasonic toughbook. It's used in the field so it needs to be waterproof and drop proof. The only other requirements are it needs to run windows (currently runs xp, I assume W7/8.1 are fine) and it needs to have a comm port. I don't want to mess around with RS232-USB as I've had only problems with this in the past. A long(ish) battery life is preferable.

Does anyone know of any alternatives to toughbooks? They are horrendously expensive

Comments

  • yes i agree, they are heinously expensive.

We gave up and just use cheap Toshiba laptops. At the end of the day, you have to go through 10 $400 laptops to reach the value of a toughbook. Unless you're actually in water, it's unlikely to happen

    • Well, its for taking the data off a water quality probe - so while it's not in the water, it' likely to get splashed often.

  • Another alternative is to use a tablet with a tough case, but this is complicated by your need for a serial interface. I know what you mean about RS232-USB.

  • toughbooks are not waterproof

Waterproof Fujitsu tablet. Doesn't have a serial port though.
