How would the Tuner work in Australia? I've bought US car stereo before and it wouldn't tune to the Australian stations.

    • +1

using it with Us to Au power adapter and set top box for TV. as per description

      • +3

In other words, you can't use the inbuilt tuner?

        • +2

          Gaz1, that's correct.

        • that would be correct, the US tuner is useless in Aus.

        • +7

@FarQ: i havent used an internal tuner on a tv for the last 5 years.

        • @heathwithnoteeth:
          Same.
Current TV tuners are very lacking, compared to a PVR or media centre.

        • +1

          Cool.

    • +2

I bought a Toshiba 46" last year from Amazon and the tuner works fine here in Ausyralia. Obviously do your research.

    • yep, for most US TV's you'd need a STB (HD can be bought for >$20)
Look carefully at the specs around video/hdmi inputs - many of them won't play Aus (PAL) DVD players via HDMI as US HDMI inputs are (were) often NTSC only.
unlikely to have local warranty support
need a decent step down transformer (not the cheapy converters) (mine was about $100 but was a bit of overkill)
has US apps on the smart TV side so i watch netflix directly from the TV (using a DNS setting on the TV)

having said all that, i brought my US TV and DVD system when i moved back here and, as per Royal9, quite happy with it and think it was worth it. but will be buying locally if/when upgrading in the future.

How much does a 4k set top box cost ?
Id imagine if you use a HD STB then you only get 1080 on a 4k TV?? Bit of a waste of power running a 4k TV yeah?

    • +18

Do they even broadcast in 4k yet?

Do they even broadcast in 1080p??!

      • yeah I doubt they do.
there's barely any 4k content out there, even blurays are at max 1080p.
you'd have to look for speciality online services I think.

apparently 4k TVs upscale 1080p and it looks better than a regular 1080p display. I've read that it can look as good as native 4k res videos.

it's funny that you can get 4k cameras built into phones these days. might have to make your own videos.

        • -1

You make your own videos is what they call "tapes"!

      • Australian TV broadcasts in 576p, then upscale to 720p but some newer movies are in 1080i.

        • +1

          I thought it was 576i

        • @Baghern:

          http://www.freeview.com.au/faq/glossary.aspx?glossaryId=14

          High Definition (HD)
Picture - The Australian Government has decreed that HD can be broadcast at a number of resolutions, beginning with 576p, stepping up to 720p and finally 1080i. The ‘p’ stands for ‘progressive’, which just means the lines are refreshed in one pass, rather than interlaced. HD picture is more stable and potentially has more detail.

Sound - Most programs will have Dolby Digital 2/0 sound, which is a slight improvement on MPEG sound. Both are better than analogue sound because neither suffers from interference. It’s possible to broadcast surround sound (5.1) with both SD and HD, and if you’ve got the right equipment to play it you’ll get a very similar experience to watching a DVD with surround sound. However, not all programs are made or broadcast with surround sound — it’s usually restricted to movies or special events.

      • The odd movie or two, and the occasional large sports game is in 1080, but sadly most of the content on free to air is not 1080.

      • 4K will NEVER be broadcast. It will be transmitted via fibre or cable at some point in the future but it will never be broadcast. The bandwidth required would use up all or more than each individual network has allocated to them in Australia.

        • Just wait will quantum bandwidth is discovered… there are infinite realities just waiting for our excess bandwidth requirements. You could download every byte of a show simultaneously via an unlimited supply of redundant dimensions, all of which could be deleted into oblivion when you're done.
The future is already out there. Quite scary when you think of it.

  • Three things to say :

    Display Port
    HDMI 2.0

    … and

WHY Not??! Seiki said it was coming late 2013 early 2014

It's good but it could be almost perfect.

  • +1

    Its 30Hz?
Would this be good for watching blurays in the living room?

    • +12

Ironically, until the late 19th century, living rooms (known then as parlour rooms) are where the deceased were laid out before their funerals. Hope this helps.

      • +8

wasn't much entertainment back in those days so you had to make do.

      • Sounds a little stiff, if you ask me

      • thats why they called them "living" rooms, hey?

    • movies are shot in 24fps… so yes

      • -1

Our regular screens still refresh at 50/60hz. You'll definitely notice the slideshow look to 30hz.

        • +1

Not for blurays. 24p content at 60hz just means the tv is doing a 3:2 pull down, repeated frames don't make a film smoother.

    • It would be fine, because bluray is only 1080p.

The 30Hz is for 4k the resolution.

  • +3

Wow, check out the 65" model

    It's $1,149, save $2,850!

  • Hey Royal9, any details on the STB?

    • i bought a thomson HD unit from target for $19. works fine on my unit. haven't programmed my universal remote properly yet so it means an extra remote on the odd occasion that i use it

      • Thanks quasi.
I have the 39" version of this tv and I use it as a pc monitor.
I should get a set top box if it's that cheap!

  • How is the warranty ? Will be any problem if buy from US ?

  • I've seen this in action at 4K and could never watch it (wouldn't never spend money on it, even though it's a good deal) because 30hz is just yuck. It really is, especially if you are connecting a game console (and upscaling) or using a computer at 4K.

The only way I'd recommend it is the fact that it's pretty much the biggest computer screen that offers true 120hz (at 1920x1080). The next largest actual monitor that offers this is 27".

    • -1

Well consoles don't have the power to push 60Hz anyway, but connecting it to a computer would suck, also the input lag would be horrible.

      • Actually a lot of Wii U games run at 60fps, and a couple on Xbox One and PS4.

        • You mean 1080p @ 60fps, which this TV can do. Phreakuency is talking about 4K resolution, which maxes out at 30Hz,

        • At the moment it's only PS4 that can run native 1080p at 60fps. The rest are at 720p including Wii U and Xbox One.

        • Pretty sure games like Rayman Legends run @ 1080p 60fps on all consoles. Though that isn't saying much.

    • Pretty sure no console outputs 4k, even upscaled …so the 30hz is irrelevant in this case.

      • At the moment.
Sony announced that it was possible and would implement it at a later date.

Or course that's video, there is hardly enough processing power in even the best gaming pcs at the moment to game at any kind of quality at 4k.

make sure you read the Q&A section. it has some hilarious stuff.

Q: How does it have a built in VCR? and does it slice bananas?
A: It doesn't have a VCR built in, but it can definitely slice bananas. The only issue is you lose about an inch of banana at the slice because the edge is a bit dull compared to other banana slicing implements.

  • +1

Too many reports of it breaking down. Then warranty becomes an issue.

    • I'm concerning about the warranty as well. How did you find reports ?

      • Read the Amazon feedback section

    • The p&h would not be refunded if you are entitled to a refund. So you could bearound $200 out of pocket as soon as you got it

  • This makes me think even the Korean 27" 2560x1440 monitors are expensive.

  • -2

Wouldn't this be a better option?
Local stock, warranty and AC adapter

10 inch in difference is a big different.

      • +1

        That's what she said!

    • How is that even a comparison? 10" Smaller, and ~$150 more (Maybe more after shipping)

  • I have the smaller Seiki that I use as a monitor and I tried it with my cheap blue ray player using hdmi. The picture blanked out a lot and the quality was less than that from my Samsung "parlour" tv. Maybe if I had a high quality player that could upscale things would be better. Also I would prefer an ips type screen. I will check out Targets set top boxes.

  • as a comparison 4k product in a similar total price point (paid $599 @ msy) picked up and installed today Sammy's UAD U28D590D 60hz 4k.
Funny thing is my maxed out i7 fusion drive 16gb ram mac mini with a crappy apple intel 4000 video card even with a 1.2 mini display port dongle can only play osx mavericks to 2560-1440-1600 but i plugged my 1/10th price before upgrade asus chromebox haswell 8gb box in and it played 3840-2160 instantly in super high definition.
running parallels 9 so may use the sammy as a win 8.1 device to get the proper 4k but pretty sweet fast 1ms tho tn 2560x1440 as my crossover 30"ips 30q5pro decided not to turn on friday and once i got msy email and 4k under $600 had to grab it. tho what i really wanted was the LG UM95 34"beast http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-34UM95-P-ultrawide-monitor (but at $1295 at msy and u only get in effect 1.4x x 27"at 2560 x 1440…
it's still cheaper to buy 2 x 27"and get more screen real-estate… I'm so over osx.. even the Mac Pros have 4k issues..

the net: i think the seiki may be more probs than worth it.. (coming from an ex korean monitor ips fan)
this sammy actually boots on and off immediately!!!
