Canon Lens 18-55

Hi,
I am looking for a canon lens 18-55mm.
The one I received with my bundle stopped working in AF mode.

Please suggest me the best place to look for this.

  • Get someone who knows to check your camera and lens first. Make sure there is something wrong with it before you replace it. Double check it's not something simple like the manual focus switch on the lens…

If it definitely needs replacing, I would buy a second hand lens from ebay. Just make sure the seller has a good history / rating.

    • Thanks for the info.

I dropped my lens on the beach once and some sand got into the it. After that AF stopped working.

  • I have one like this as well haha, autofocus broken :|

  • Those lenses really aren't worth much. You're better off saving up for something better.

  • That reminds me that I need to sell my kit lenses (18-55mm and 55-250mm)

I agree with googlefart, I upgraded to a 18-135mm and it is an all round beter lens. I don't see the point in spending the money on an L series when I dont take photography to seriously.

    Where are you located?

  • Exactly the same happen to me. So I did some reading and walked many shops.
SLR Lenses for Canon DSLR Cameras including Canon, Tamron and Sigma SLR LENS.
The lens itself is more that 50% of the price of the camera, even $10 grand plus is available.
Cheapest lens to replace I came across was a prime lens for $99 on special.
Was thinking of getting a 18mm to 200mm around $400 so one lens replace both lenses from original and then sell the long lens. But I am not good in selling things on ebay. Have been using the iphone to take photo instead.

Link is some choices of Sigma.

Let me know if you have any idea. I miss using my DSLR.

  • Grab a "nifty-fifty" 50mm f1.8 off ebay for around $100
Or even the Yongnuo YN35mm f2.0 for around $150

Much sharper images from these price lenses compared to the kit. But if you want that zoom freedom, stick with the kit. Just buy a second-hand one off gumtree/ebay or even from someone above ^

  • I would suggest against getting a prime lens, unless you have other lenses already and you need a prime to do specific tasks. You can't really use a prime lens to do everyday shooting, it will bother the hell out of you without the zoom.

My suggestion is to get the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 lens. It is better quality than the kit lens but much cheaper than Canon lenses with the same specs. I've had mine for close to ten years and it still works perfectly on my 6D. I find it adequate for almost everything and you can get creative with filters. I'm not sure if Sigma still does it, but back when I bought mine, they actually price matched with grey imports, so I got a good deal from Michael's in melbourne CBD even though they didn't have the lens on sale. I have since bought other Sigma lenses from them as well.

If you still want the kit lens, there should be some second hand ones for sale like what others have said.

    • I use essentially a crop sensor equivalent, the Sigma 17-50 f/2,8 OS HSM lens, and got it for $250 used. Stunning lens, L lens like performance, perfect bokeh and great depth of field. It's truly amazing, but the sad thing is I need to offload my old kit lenses because I don't use them anymore.
