Hit and run: What can I do?

I was in Parramatta today when someone reversed their car into mine and just sped off. All I got was 5 out of the 6 number/letters on his number plate and the colour of the car. Is there anything I can do about this?

UPDATE: The idiot came back around, without stopping again, and I managed to get his complete number plate and make of his car. I've spoken to the police and he told me he'll most likely get at least 2 fines. JUSTICE!

First call the police, leaving the scene of a accident is a fineable offence.

    • Happened to me before. Police wont do a thing now that you know who it is.

You can always go to your local state motoring and registration office website and run a rego check, type in the letter or number you think you've missed.

    VIC and NSW:

    NSW
    https://www.myrta.com/wps/portal/extvp/myrta/rego/check-reg-…

    VIC
    http://vre.vicroads.vic.gov.au/

    • I've thinned it down to just 4 possible suspects but I don't suppose there's a way of finding out who it was since it wasn't on a main road and there were no cameras nearby.

  • I have this as well, i got the whole number plate but not the state of the truck. reported to the cop, and few days later, the cop said they can't do anything as i can't confirmed the state of the number plate.
Good luck if you get a good cop to help you

  • Go to your local police station or call them and tell them what happened.
Go from there as it is a fineable offence.

Not much you can do without the rego. You can report it to the local police station and hope that a witness goes to the station to report the accident but you have a slim hope of finding the offender.
Happened to my in laws, ended up having to pay excess on her insurance to get her car repaired. Her case was the car pretended to stop but when she got out to speak to the driver, he drove off and she couldn't see the plates as there were other cars in the way. Good luck!

  • How bad was the damage?
Remember to jot down other vital details of the perpetrator - vehicle make and model (if you managed to see it)

Yay! But what about the damage to your car? I assume the police report/fine will make the driver inarguably liable for any damage costs of yours?

    • I'm waiting for the police to contact me back with the guys details so I'm not quite sure what's to happen next. Logically speaking he should be held liable for my fees.

  • You're lucky you got the number plate. Last Friday my Sister was driving in the middle lane on a Motorway. A car from the left lane hit her and pushed her into the right lane where another car hit her. The car in the left lane sped off. The Police and insurance company say that mystery car is at fault.
