I've gotta say… the Tape Measure Key Ring I received when I recently spent over $50 in-store is surprisingly good! Only 1m long but fairly well made for what's really just a novelty item and very handy to have a few dotted around including one for the car.

  • Gee that camera seems pretty damn good.
What makes a gopro so much more expensive or is it like apple, perceived better quality because of flashy marketing and high price?

    • -1

Same with products that have elaborate/over-the-top packaging. It only makes me assume they're using that to help justify the price.

      • +1

The packaging and/or hype for GoPro isn't what makes them so expensive. They are expensive because they are the best in their class and demand is very high.

GoPro's shoot higher quality video than all the other contenders. The low light performance is the best, the noise is the lowest, the bitrate is the highest , the dynamic range is the highest, the video modes are the most plenty (hello 48fps at 2560x1440, or 120fps at 1080, or 4K if you even want it) and the optics allow for the widest shots compared to all the other action cameras.

Then there's the accessories. GoPro has had yonks in the business and there's so many 3rd party accessories out there that it's cheap and easy to stock up on a kit that you can wear from your toe to your forehead, or mount it on your pen to your aeroplane.

They are in a league of their own and they know it.

There have been a few that tried to copy the premium (The Sony actioncams and Contour come to mind), but they just didn't get the picture quality that gopro has.

There's heaps of independent reviews out there all saying pretty much what I just pointed out.

Gopro has a better sensor, better optics and better software.
The camera looks like a clone of the SJ4000, same specs with wifi added, in which case it's about on the same pq level as the Hero 2.

      • Do you think I can use this camera as a fish camera? Can I put this on a pole and see what is going on in the water using my ipad wirelessly?

        • It'll be fine for putting under water in the waterproof case, you'll have to check the app they mentioned to see how good it is at streaming to an iPad, but I assume it will work fine.
Keep in mind battery life will be ~1 hour, probably less if it's streaming over wifi the whole time, so you wont be able to continually stream for longer then that.

          @hellbound:

Also, streaming WiFi tends not to work well when the device is underwater, at least for GoPros.

        • Wireless signal won't transmit well under water.

        • I tried that once. I made my own mount from a pole mounting kit and an extendable broom pole. It didn't turn out well because the conditions weren't great. I didn't use WiFi for trying to find fish - I just wanted some cool shots.

Light travels really poorly underwater. If it's not a clear sunny day then you won't get much detail without a light on it, and even then don't expect to see anything besides fish silhouettes at more than 8-10 meters.

Also if the water is murky then forget about seeing anything more than 2meters even with a light.

Usually when you see awesome underwater footage from a gopro it's usually in the shallows with great lighting conditions and pristine clear water. In that case it will work great.

The 6-in-1 Jump Starter's are amazing, easily filled a totally flat tyre over the weekend while it was still on the statesman, plenty of juice left to top all of the others up and then jump the car.

    Would buy again.

    • Any idea how long the battery in these hold for? I've always considered getting similar but worried that if I just leave it in my car, by the time I actually need it then the battery in the starter would be dead as well as my car battery.

I have a few of the older model of these (basically the same thing). They contain a very bog standard, generic brand, Chinese made 17Ah SLA Battery so it's best to give them a top-up charge once every month. The supplied 'charger' is just a plugpack power supply or a cigarette lighter cable which feeds the unit 12V or thereabouts and that is only controlled by a very cheap & basic charging circuit that really only limits the current but that's all. Leave it on charge for more than 15 hours or so and you'll slowly kill the battery as there's no cut-off or intelligent trickle or maintenance charge modes.

I've had mine for a couple of years now and they're still going very strong but I'm pretty strict with the charge regime ie. I do it regularly and make sure I don't over-do it. The annoying thing is that manufacturers could include an intelligent charging circuit for not a lot more and if they did you'd be able to leave these permanently connected at home or in the car so they're read to go without having to think.

        • Thanks for the very detailed description! Will have a thinkover and see if I can keep up a strict charge regime as you said.

  • Got one of these for my kids for Xmas:
    Aquapod Bottle Rocket Launcher

    Great fun!

    • I know a kid that's an adult that might like that.

      Thanks.

  • hmm no minimum spend but minimum order is $10…
