Cheapest way to retain Mobile Number - Going Overseas for 3.5 months

Hi all,

Going to be overseas from start of October until mid January.

The last thing I would want is for Lycamobile to release my prepaid service number to general consumers due to inactivity/no recharges done.

What's the cheapest way to retain the number, some details:

  1. On Lycamobile, currently on unlimited 29.90 plan
  2. Happy to change providers or plans if it's cheaper - not going to use the phone anyway.
  3. Need to retain this number.
  4. Total days away - 112 days

Thanks in advance OzB!

Love you all

You can port to Amaysim. Costs port and only pay for what you use (in your case nothing) over the next few months.

    • Sorry mate, are you talking about the Pay as you Go plan that Amaysim has?

Yes, the "AS YOU GO". I've a couple of SIMS on that plan for the kids phones which are rarely used.

Note that Amaysim's PAYG has 90 days expiry, whereas Aldi Mobile's PAYG has 365 days expiry — might be more suitable for OP.

      • Thanks scotty, might sound crazy but i'm honoured to see an ozb veteran reply to my post lol.

        Thanks mate

Stuff-ups of various types can take place with numbers, unused or otherwise.

I had a number attached to an non-expired SIM pack that was already in-use by a second person - my activation onto that number somehow still took place and things got weird…
There also remain some partially 'crossed wires' (and resulting weirdness) associated with a separate SIM account that I use.

Those things aside, unless something has changed very recently, under port authority rules (that sounds very New York), I believe that mobile numbers are kept out of the port-able number-pool for 180 days even after an account is closed.

In your particular situation, you may wish to chance things on that basis. It's up to you.

Otherwise, as above, or by way of any of the cheap number-babysitting options that might suit you - even after you return.

They should state in their T&C how long you'll retain your number for without a recharge. From memory it's something like 6 months for Telstra, so probably similar.

Optus my prepaid daily. Total cost is $2 for SIM plus $10 initial recharge which will give you six months before expiry… (In case you want to stay away longer :) ).

Port to Optus, go away, get back, use up $10 credit, port to whoever you want after that.

    • (oh btw: reason I suggested this option cause it gives unlimited text/calls and big data that the OP is used to based on their current Lebara unlimited plan)

      • Don't you mean Lyca as the OP said, or have they made a mistake?

        • Apologies, I meant Lyca not Lebara, thanks for the correction theone83 :)

The best way is buy an Aldi mobile prepaid sim. They come with $5 included credit, 365 day expiry and 90 days grace thereafter where no aditional recharge has been made. Then port back to your old carrier after the 12 months.

I've done this with a mobile which I got from Vodafone - Easy Aye?!

As a P.S. to the previous posters, this way is the longest and cheapest way to retain the number.

      This, $5 for 365 days.

      • Yes, It's not really a deal with Aldi Mobile, but a standard inclusion when you get one of their sim cards, and a handy way for the OP to retain their number, especially if they decide to go away for longer than 6 months.
