Did coffee prices go up? Online deal prices seem to have moved from ~$20/kg to ~$30/kg this year

Anyone else agree there seems to be an fairly large increase in coffee prices in the last 6 months?
I'm happy to pay $45 for 2kgs delivered (whole beans) but not $60-70. Anyone have any secret suppliers? Manna Beans doesn't seem to be as good value as they used to be.

  • Be a pleb and buy them at Coles. Under $20/kg when on special.

I did this once. Never again. Worst coffee ever

      • Suppose it's all a matter of e
Personal taste really (how else dan you explain people liking Starbucks)?! I don't mind Coles Dark Roast $13/Kg, but don't like any other coffee they sell which are all more expensive. I'd need to go ~$45/Kg at a local roaster to find one I like better.

Costco sell beans at $18 for 1.8Kg (from memory). I personally hated them but others may like them.

Other option is to buy Green Beans and roast them yourselves. Can be done in an oven. Cost between $12.50-20Kg. Check out coffee snobs website.

I reckon that people like Manna Beans were seriously cheap, and need to cover rising costs.

My local roasters charge $36 per kilo, and not as good as Manna Beans.

Coles/Woolies beans are worth what you pay for them - life is too short to drink crap coffee…………….

Oh, and you get lots of shots per kilo of beans, so I don't consider the price rises as a large part of my coffee costs.

I would pull around 20 shots a week at home, and 14 a week at work, so go through a fair bit.

    • You make some good points which I agree with. I put in an order with Manna Beans today because I agree even at new higher prices they are still the best value around. Disagree with what others say about supermarket coffee however maybe that's because I'm a snob.

Interested to see some blind tests for coffee beans (ala wine tasting), I wonder how much most people can tell the difference between varieties under controlled testing conditions?

      • I bought some Harris Farm beans once just to see (I figured they'd be better than Coles), and they tasted like mud.

I live next door to Toby's Estate, so I bought 500g there the other day — the blend I got cost $27. This is the same price as the Fortitude blend from Manna (except it's an extra $7 for shipping there), which surprised me.

We used to do this when I was a barista and had little competitions in store. People generally can, but most people can't say why they like or dislike one over the other.

I agree with the avoid cheap beans' - I drink cheap instant rather than the unprocessed dust on offer. The world price stayed low for a fair while, I'm just hoping the reason isn't similar to what happened to a large NGO's Fair Trade' West African coffee a few years back, when the 500 gram went from ~$7 to $9, with the only change being some vulture in Melbourne re-packing and popping his name on the tin. If he'd whipped it out in the park, he may have at least provided some old ladies with a little mirth and amusement at his miniature ….

    Hi Paul, if you're there.

    I use Coffee Snobs www.coffeesnobs.com.au

Located in Geelong, he roasts every Wednesday and Sunday and then express posts them the next day.
I order mine to be roasted on the Sunday, he posts Monday morning and I get it Tuesday, and I live in regional QLD, so the coffee is very fresh each time.
Join and become a member go the "Bean Bay" link at the top, and choose what ever coffee variety you wish, mine costs $35.00 kg, plus postage.
I have been a member for a few years now, great coffee, and so fresh, if you don't live near anywhere where they will roast fresh for you.

I have heard that green beans have shot up in price lately and don't forget Auspost charge 13.40 to post 2kg, which makes $45 for 2kg only $16/kg for the coffee. I reckon you're unlikely to find those prices any more.

    • I'm still getting them either from coffee snobs between $10.50-16/Kg + postage or from the Coffee Company in Balaclava Melbourne for ~$15-16/Kg (no postage in my case).

  • i got some from cleanskin coffee in sydney for $16.90 a kilo. it was really good.
theres a cleanskin in brisbane too but their prices are very high, i'm not sure if they are connected or not.
anyway cleanskincoffee.com if you're interested in the cheap one.
fair shipping price to at 9.99
