Strange Experience at Jaycar

Not really complaining about my experience, but I'm curious to see if anyone has had a similar experience at Jaycar (or anywhere else).

I called up Jaycar to see if they had any trailer light kits before going into the store, which they said they had. Getting into the store, they actually had another product (not what I was looking for) on the shelf. The item I did need showed up on their system as having 7 in stock, but it was not on the shelf where it should be.

This is where it got interesting. One of the workers at the store said they saw them out back and they eventually found them in "quarantine". The person serving me asked me why I think they're in quarantine… I said I don't know… He said he could still sell it to me if I'd like to take a risk. I asked him several times if I could return it if it was faulty, but I never got a straight answer. His answer was more along the lines of "I wouldn't but it if you don't want to take the risk."

It was all quite strange. Obviously I decided not to buy the item. Has anyone had a similar experience?

What could be so wrong with a trailer light kit??
If he sold you the item and the receipt was not marked faulty or similar then you would have full right to return the item.
It may have been quarantined for some accounting reason… who knows?
Is there a supercheap or repco nearby?

    • Repco doesn't sell a "kit". I'll try Supercheap when I get a chance. :)

    Strange Experience at Jaycar

Most of my experiences have been kinda weird at Jaycar over the years…not necessarily unpleasant, but the staff do tend to make it special! ;)

  • I am curious as to why Jaycar has a 'quarantine' area?
Do you think they imported something else with the trailer parts???

Maybe "trailer light kits" is their code for other… goods. Of the mind altering kind. Wink.

Then your interaction with their staff makes a little more sense:

they saw them out back and they eventually found them in "quarantine". The person serving me asked me why I think they're in quarantine… I said I don't know… He said he could still sell it to me if I'd like to take a risk. Wiiiiink.

Okay. This story was far more amusing in my head.

    • He did offer to take me out back to check out his goods… :|

      • Stranger danger!

      • Did he inappropriately touch your trailer?

  • I worked in supercheap and we got told to take some trailer lights off show. One set was a marine version and the defect was that the seal want great and leaked. The other was that it hadn't gone through the proper ADR certification (would meet them, just hadn't submitted yet)

Is this in Brisbane at all? I also experienced not so good customer service from Jaycar. Last Christmas, I wanted to buy a solar charger advertised for 3 for $22 each from a mail out. I think I checked their website before hand. Got to their Browns Plains store and could not find item at that price, so asked for assistance. The item scanned at a higher price. When asked about the price on the pamphlet, I was told to find the pamphlet and bring it in, as they only had the new pamphlet that just started in the store.

I left but decided to go back to try another staff member. While waiting for a staff member, I went on the computer they had available and found the deal on the computer. I spoke to a manager/supervisor who got the previous person who I spoke to and then confirmed the deal. The previous staff member was still abrupt and was saying things like "Apparently this guy says he saw it advertised for X price" in front of me. Bad service in my opinion, considering the staff member should have looked into it properly the first time.

    • This was in Victoria. But yeah, customer service was bad even beyond what I described above. The person serving me told me to look for the item while her served two other customers…

  • Most of their employees are a bit eccentric, comes with the territory of being an electronics geek
