Really interesting read on Sega vs Nintendo history

Was reading this gaming article and it's about the SEGA NINTENDO War in the 90's.
"Donkey Kong" was created when Nintendo lost the videogaming rights to Popeye and had to come up with alternative characters in a rush. Mario was named after Nintendo's office landlord.

Sonic the Hedgehog, meanwhile, was originally called Mr. Needlemouse. He sported a punky spiked collar, fangs and a busty girlfriend named Madonna before Sega's U.S. arm persuaded Japanese counterparts to remove them.

LOL.

  • Also, the reason why Samus in the early metroid games turned into a morphball when navigating crawlspaces was because the developers didn't have the skill to put in crouch and crawling postures or animations, so they simply had the protagonist turn into a rolling ball as it was much easier to animate within the limitations of 8-bit graphics.

    The moar you know.

  • Read Console Wars.

  • I watched a Mario trivia yesterday and they said "The bushes and the clouds in Mario are the same graphic just recoloured", to which I said "Congratulations on being the last people to find that out."

Also we all know Shiggy made zelda because there were caves in his home town that he was afraid to go into. So he made a game about goin' into caves. A+

It upsets me that we'll never get any more interesting innovations because of memory size or frame rate-solving hack fixes in the future. Except for the feet in Fire Emblem. That's hilarious.
