HELP! URGENT! Lancer 07 ES no key, how to move it?

Hi all,

I accidentally took the lancer's key when flying out to work. Unfortunately I lost my spare key long time ago. Now the car is blocking my wife's car on the driveway, so I need it moved. How do i change it to neutral transmission in automatic gear? Don't really wanna spend couple hundred dollars just to get it towed. Please help! Thanks!

There is a button under a flap on the gear stick usually.

EDIT: the most dangerous way would be to use a trolley jack, raise the wheels, then roll it.

  • Its not a complete answer but renting a car for a day while its express posted back may be a cheaper alternative. Or are you a member of RAC.

My guess is that you will need to key to get the transmission out of park. Another solution is to have the car jacked up with a trolley jack and moved but that would take a little male expertise and moving dollies ($100+ set)

    • not gonna happen with my wife..she's looking for the manual shift unlocker now

Unfortunately, I'm not with RAC with that car, but I guess I'll have to be one soon if my wife can't figure out

      • You can call RAC and change it over to that car for the time being. Change it back later.

        • It usually takes 3 days for changes to take effect.

  • Is the car unlocked? Is it flat ground?

    • lucky i didn't lock the car, and on flat ground..

So remove the handbrake. Then put the vehicle into neutral, if you can't put it into neutral, use the shift override as per the above link (use a flat head screw driver). Push it out of the way, move the trapped car, then push it into the carpark.

If you can't override the shift lock, then use a jack to raise the front a little and then use the wheels on the jack to roll it out of the way. You can get jacks for $60. It's incredibly dangerous though.

        (no responsibility for damages etc)

  • Another vote for finding the shift override thingy. Google might help you find it easier.

You may be able to join RACV on the spot, I know you can do that with NRMA, especially if you already have membership with another car.

If it's rolled out of the way, don't forget you won't be able to steer it. The steering lock will kick in when it starts moving.

Tow truck would probably be a simple safe solution. Cost way less than $200. There is no other free soultion - otherwise cars would be too easy to steal. That's the whole point of the key thingy - to stop people taking your car.

Alright guys, at the end of the day, I just express posted the key back (took two days, not sure why). Was able to borrow a car form relative while waiting for the key. Definitely will duplicate another key in case something like this happen again.

      • Appreciate the update :)
