Seek information of "frugal" flight from Sydney (SYD) to Jakarta (CGK) 13/12/2014 to 01/01/2015

hi,
I would need to travel from Sydney to Jakarta for a friend's wedding to be held on 18/12/2014, but seems the travel date is around high-season flight period.
kindly share if you have experienced or information on the best cheapest route to Jakarta.
Also thinking of flying on 13/12 (shoulder season?) and back on 01/01 (noticed flight is cheaper on this date).
Appreciate all your info, thx.

  • Not sure about going flight, but return flights are cheap over the Christmas -NY timeframe according to my brother who lives in Bali and returns here at that time. So look at flights from the 26th as well.

Since you are looking at earlier flights you might like to also check flights via other areas like KL or Singapore and do some sightseeing there rather than spending the extra time in Jakarta. Other alternatives are Perth/Bali/Jakarta or Darwin/Bali/Jakarta

  • +1

    Try www.skyscanner.com.au/

Remember to factor in the cost of extra accommodation/living if a cheaper flight results in you staying for longer then original planned.

  • You can do SYD-CGK-SYD for $972 on Qantas flying out on the 12th or 14th and returning on the 1st of January. It's $1007 if you go on the 13th.

Go to hipmunk.com and play around with the dates. There are Garuda flights for $AUD840. The prices are in USD, so if you have the 28 Degrees Card you can take advantage of the cheaper price as the card won't charge transaction fees etc, just uses the Mastercard going forex rate.

Jetstar, Scoot, Airasia etc are all surprisingly more expensive.

Remember there are also immigration taxes and departure fees you must pay in cash at the Indonesian airport when travelling to and from Indonesia (which will add another $50 or so).

  • try possibly air asia syd-kl-cgk.. as flight prices to KL were one sale recently

  • very expensive time to fly… Qantas and Garuda offer direct flights but are more expensive. Garuda is $887 if you return on Sunday the 4th Jan.

Jetstar/Air Asia/Malaysian can all be done with multiple stops and usually $150+ cheaper than the direct flights, even more so if you can score sale flights.

Just balance up the savings vs. the time wasted in stop overs..

I've had good results with Bestflights.com.au and www.netfare.com.au/

    • Skyscanner gives lowest price $714 for SYD-DPS return for OP's dates. I would eat my fedora if I couldn't get from Bali to Jakarta and back for under $173 using surface transport.

      • Surface transport would either be awesome or absolute hell.. But I think you are probably right.

Even looking at the low cost airlines from Bali to Jakarta might be worth it.
Batik air is an interesting experience… I think they have designed their domestic planes for the domestic market, i've never seen such a small amount of legroom on such a large plane!

Or a combination of both. You need to do a lot more research in advance if you're going this route. You learn much more about the country and see much more of it, but if all the OP wants to do is go to his friend's wedding and get out then I would recommend against it.

The domestic minibuses are often worse. Long-distance aircon coaches I found to be Ok.

  • appreciate all your inputs folks.. will play around the suggested routes & sites incl. land transport DPS-JKT cheers.
