Opal card top up at selected Woolworths eligible for Everyday Rewards Points

Some people may have already known this, but I just found out yesterday and got rather excited! :) I had shared it with my colleagues and now I'd like to share it on beloved OzBargain.

My Opal card balance was very low and there was an Opal card kiosk near the station. I asked one of the guys if I could top up my card there. They were unable to do it, but instead, they gave me a brochure of which retailers do the top ups. I found Woolworths in the list and I was just right nearby. I normally top up the card online, but I decided to go to the Woolie's for a top up this time.

First I thought, "Hmmm… I may be able to use recently opened ME Bank MasterCard Paypass for 5% Cashback… I'd better start topping up my Opal card at shops!" Then when the cashier put my $80 transaction through, she told me I can earn Everyday Rewards points from the Opal card top ups too! I have the Qantas Frequent Flyer linked to my Everyday Rewards so I received the receipt saying "You have earned at least 50 Qantas Frequent Flyer points for this sale." Only I had activated my Father's Day Bonus 250 points offer before… :(

I was already happy as it was, then the cashier told me I got a $5 off docket for next shopping on the receipt too! Not sure why I got this $5 off docket, but sure made me happier :)

Here is the link to the list of Opal card retailers
When you type "Woolworths" in search field, you can easily find them.

  • In a similar fashion 7/11 is a go card retailer in QLD, they have PayPass/Paywave. As such for awhile I have been able to get 5% off my go card top ups.

  • Do they do it at a normal cash? I.e. where you would also take groceries…or is it a special location in the stores? Thanks!

    • Everyday Rewards points are eligible with cash payments as long as over $30, I would say. They can only put the Opal card transactions at specific cash registers in store. Ask the shop attendant at whichever Woolie's you are :)

  • I just topped up but the topup isn't showing up in the online portal.

How long does it take for it to appear?

It states on the receipt "Opal Card Txn Number 47?" How does that work? Yet at the top it says "Starter Pack Issued Successfully"?

    • Guys, I just tapped on and reversed it at my local train station.

It seems like it works fine and the money is on the card.

What I don't understand is why the pin number to check the balance is the same to transfer your balance across to another card. If you are travelling on the network and someone transfers away your balance, it would immediately mean an expensive fine for those travelling on unregistered cards. Furthermore, the information might be captured by people using proxies to check their balance.

I wouldn't recommend using the internet to check your balance as it would leave an ip address trail or be captured by the man in the middle proxies. Instead just use the local train station.

Either way, mainly this additional post is to clarify anyone's concerns about why the starter kit receipt has some weird Txn number and Smartcard Number that doesn't correspond to your card number.

      • Additional Update:

It takes around 10-15 minutes for the reversal to appear on the online portal. Otherwise, you can see a default fare for $8.10, but you can keep going in and out of the barriers in the meantime.
