Which IPod to get?

Hi All,
I am wanting to buy an IPod Nano as a present for my husband and I must admit I am really lost. Just wondering if anyone might know which one would be the all round best buy.

Have been looking on Ebay and they do have some cheap ones for about $120-150 however there are so many generations and some of them seem to not take ITunes (would he then not be able to download music to it??).
K-Mart had some for $189 and I am all confused. Does this mean K-Mart is more expensive or is it a better product?
I would be grateful for any advise.

  • I was going to buy the kids nano's last Christmas but after lots of research I decided much better off to spend the bit extra and buy the ipod touch. The kids love them!

    Hi prt31

I've been looking into the ipod range recently for myself, and what it comes down to is what would the device be primarily used for. If mostly for music and being active, then the ipod nano is the best, but then if you are wanting it for video then the ipod classic or touch.

In my view I would say:
small and convenient, or for those running and gyming: ipod nano
want to carry a lot of music and video primarily: ipod classic
want to play music, videos, surf the net, download apps etc : ipod touch

All ipods have to be used with Itunes, so if they claim they do not need Itunes then its not a genuine Ipod. I've seen a few of these for sale on ebay.

Shop around and you will find that prices are fairly close at Retail stores, but the best new buys I have found recently is as follows (latest generation):

Ipod Nano 8gb - Dick Smith $185 (comes with bonus AC Power Adapter)
Ipod Nano 16gb - Dick Smith $249 (comes with bonus AC Power Adapter)
Ipod Touch 8gb - Dick Smith $299 (comes with bonus AC Power Adapter)

    Cheers
    M.

Depend on your need & $$$ you willing to pay but don't buy from ebay, those prices are rip off.
You should check out Refurbished iPod from apple store come with 12 months warranty & same as brand new.

      agreed..
Buy your new iPod from Apple Refurb store linked above.. they're the cheapest by far for a new, genuine iPod..
      8Gb Nano $149
      16Gb $209

Steer clear of the fakes, they're generally poor build quality and will not work with iTunes.

All genuine iPods work with iTunes.. no matter how old they are.
The non-genuine iPod lookalikes will not work with iTunes. Anything excessively cheap on eBay will be used or a lookalike.

Don't buy from ebay, these are usually fakes/stolen or do not have the appropriate warranty.
All ipods in australia will be sold within $10 price range of one another. Any more, and they're changing you too much. Go elsewhere.

I'm not a fan of refurbished, but i won't start an argument with others about that. :P
Ok, to there are a few types of ipods that you should look at.

    Ipod shuffle - http://images.apple.com/itunes/home/images/showcase_lead_shu…
is the new small one. No screen 1-2GB capacity.
+ usually have great battery life
    - expensive + you need to be using ipod headphones, no screen
these ones a great if you've only got a small amount of music you want to carry.

    Ipod nano - http://images.apple.com/ipodnano/images/ipodnano_hero2008090…
    2" screen, come in 4, 8 and 16GB varieties.
    Here are the specs http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html
+ can use aftermarket headphones, very compact and small. Solid state hard drive = if you drop it, you might scratch the device, but the hard drive won't break - great for workouts etc.
    - not as big (space wise) as classics

    Ipod classic - http://images.apple.com/ipodclassic/images/overview_hero2008…
2.5" screen, MASSIVE 120GB of storage.
+ great for large music libraries. Longer battery life (this is a bigger unit)
    - Obviously a bigger unit than the others. If you drop this one, the hard drive can break, because it is a spinning disc.

    So umm there you go.
I have both the shuffle (2nd gen), and the latest gen ipod nano. The shuffles are really small, very compact, and for their size have amazing battery life. The nano's are bigger, but you get a screen. They also have a "shake to shuffle" function, because of a built in accelerometer. Meaning if you think the song is crap, you just shake the unit, and it shuffles the playlist. First thing i would do is find out how big your husbands mp3 collection is (or how much of it he actually listens to). If he only listens to 250 songs, then the 1gb shuffle is sufficient, but if hes got 120GB of music that he loves, well perhaps the classic is better choice. If he goes for workouts, the nano or shuffle are best.

PS - don't worry about chargers etc, you can charge through usb. Or you can buy a $2 AC to USB adapter off ebay/dealextreme. Don't let people trick you into thinking a $24 charger will be needed. Oh and don't buy accessories off apple ipod store, soooo overpriced. Oh and if you buy of apple store, you get free engraving + shipping. etc etc

    Anyway, i've ranted.

Finally (and i promise i'll shut up), if your hubby will leave it lying around and hes one of those people who doesn't like his electronics scratched, buy a cheap silicon cover + screen protector for like $3 off ebay/deals extreme.

    :P

Just to confirm what has been said above. Be very wary of cheap "iPods" on ebay: there are many fakes around. If your husband has already made purchases from iTunes, then he will be much happier with a genuine Apple iPod.

I would suggest that you either
    * buy the Dick Smith deal with the bonus power adapter linked to by misa
    or
    * buy online from the Apple store and get free shipping and a free custom message engraved on the back.

ebay listings like "3rd generation nano media player mp3 mp4 8GB" are not for iPods. You can put your own music on them, but they do not work with iTunes.

I am really sorry, I went to click a + vote for you and my son accidentally pushed my elbow and it became a - vote. I have tried to change it and it seems I can't.
Does anyone know how to change it?

lol, dw, you cant. I just voted opposite to even it out. all good.

  • Thank You All so much - especially to Davo1111, your "rant" was just what I needed.
From what you all have explained i think he would probably be fine with the Shuffle, however he likes the look of the Nano, so i might get the smallest Nano for him.
    Thank you once again!!
