5 Step to access US-Only Content on your AppleTV, WDLive, PS3 (Unblock-US vs Smart DNS)

Sorry if it is not in right place. Basically, I wanted to share with ozbargain community.
Again, I am sure everyone here already knows how to setup Unblock-us account and what you might use it for.

I have tried to simplified so that one can educate their friends and family on how to do it themselves.

See article here: http://www.dealon.com.au/dns

Also, there is cheaper alternative to unblock-us which might be appealing for ozbargain community.

  • You are talking about two different technologies, but treating them the same as a VPN (virtual private network).

The use of DNS from different zones or countries to avoid geographic blocking from certain areas can be effective, but please don't treat it as VPN.

    • Thanks. I am not that technical but sort of understand what you are saying.
I got rid of VPN and replaced with DNS Provider. That makes my article simpler as well :).

      • Sorry about not replying earlier as I was mobile only on Sunday.

VPN is essentially creating a secure tunnel between two endpoints, whether they be 2 clients, client and network, or between 2 networks. When a VPN was used, and for example the network endpoint is in the US, then for all traffic flowing from the client through that endpoint, outgoing traffic will appear as if you are on the destination network (i.e. would appear as if you are in the US).

Many of the major streaming video providers actually use the DNS server which sends the lookup request to try and identify where the client is (many reasons behind it, but mostly the swap and on sell of IP addresses which formerly belonged to other geographic blocks). By the client using a US DNS server, it would think that the client is in the US even though the traffic between client and destination would not tunnel anywhere and a trace of the traffic still shows the client being in their original destination.

For the method being employed, I would choose a DNS provider who's DNS servers are on the west coast US, so that you receive links to localized content delivery servers based on the US west coast.
