whilst it might well be junk, that's quite a sweeping statement based on 3 Amazon reviews, one of which gave it 5 out of 5, and another that simply reviewed the content of the Amazon description, not the actual product. :o)
I actually own one of these and I'm pretty happy with it. It's great for making apple compote or apple pies. However, I've only tried it with crispy/firm apples (like Granny Smith).
I bought this after getting frustrated with my $60 metal apple peeler (looks like this: http://www.kitchendiscounts.com.au/homeware/cuisena-apple-pe…) and I think the cheap plastic one works better - the blade is much sharper. Just be aware that it won't core the apple …
