Sony Xperia Z1 Compact or Z1 Ultra?

Which would you buy. Z1 Compact for $387 from jb hifi, or z1 ultra from msy for $319?

  • Choosing between these 2, I would go with the Z1 Ultra from MSY because the JBHIFI Z1 Compact is loaded with Telstra Firmware, so it will be stuck with Telstra's slow firmware upgrade release cycles and contain Telstra branding and additional apps (I don't use Telstra so would not benefit from any of this). It also does not mention if it is locked to Telstra or not.

But they are very different phones and target audiences. Spec-wise the Z1 Compact is newer, faster, better camera and is a really good pocketable size. The Z1 Ultra has a really nice big screen and still pretty quick but has an average camera and would be a monster in your pocket.

For a phone, I prefer the Z1 Compact size because I already have an 8" tablet at home and a work Laptop.

The Z1 Compact price is dropping and has been around $395-430 delivered (including Australian stock) elsewhere with no branding or customised firmware and fully unlocked. Also you can choose BLACK, white or pink. Not just white or pink from JB.

Z Ultra is massive but ive had mine for a year and absolutely love it.

I just hope the next Z Ultra has smaller (particularly top and bottom) bezels. the width of the device is honestly not what gets to me - its the height, which sometimes digs into my leg when i sit down with it in my pocket in a tight pair of jeans. mind you, it fits perfectly and subtly in all my suit pants.

Z Compact is no newer or faster than the Z Ultra. They have exactly the same internals (and the same as well as the Z1). This was exactly why the Z Compact made such a splash when it was released - it was a 'mini' phone which was still fully powered and not gimped up by the manufacturer to hit a price point.
