LED or Fluro light bulbs that fit old sockets

I still have a couple of bayonet light fittings with incandescent light bulbs because all the fluro bulbs I have will not fit. The bases are too thick. Luckily they are in places that get minimal use.

Even so I would like to put in fluro or LED light bulbs without changing the fitting.

Are there any efficient bulbs now that fit all the old fittings?

Thanks

  • $25 to $30 multi colour LEDs in Woolies. With remote. I'm sure many other places sell them and feeBay of course. I got mine on special and to earn EDR and CC points.

    Bunnings would have them also.

Now all you need is some IR bulb to turn the light into a flashing disco dance light. Have mini parties in the hall way ;-p

  • You may find its just the screw shroud, that protects you against touching the base of the globe, on the batten holder, that needs replacing with one that isnt as long.

    See

You may see that these screw on plastic surrounds are now not as long as the older type units you have.

If you are a little handy you can trim your existing units with a coping saw, or buy new units from Bunnings or Masters, and just swap the screw on shrouds from your old batten with the new ones. (That way you dont have to have someone with electrical training replace the whole batten). Ideally replacing with a new shroud is better as the old ones may have become brittle with age and heat from the globe.

Or get an electrician to replace the battens.

    • Thanks for the response.

I have already trimmed down all the battens that are directly fitted to the ceiling (the type you linked to) by unscrewing and cutting them. So that is OK, the bulbs fit fine now.

What I meant above is I have a couple of nice light fixtures with glass covers that are more difficult to replace. There is no screw off things on these.

I was just wondering if there are any LED or Fluro bulbs that are slimmer that will just fit.

  • OK I managed to install a newer Fluro bulb onto one of the fittings, tight fit but OK and a halogen in the other.

Seems like a good result, will convert to LED at some stage.
