Travel insurance for Europe

Hi all,

Going to Europe for 6 weeks, thinking of buying additional insurance on top of what my credit card offered (don't really trust cc insurance). Just need basic cover for medical emergency and lost luggage (hearing bad things about Rome airport)

Based on your experience, who's the best travel insurance provider with good price & no fuss claiming?

Thanks!

  • I've used a few but made a claim with Travel Insurance Direct (TID) and they were great. It was only a pair of lost sunglasses, but was quick and easy and I've used them for all my trips since.

I don't know if the others would have been just as easy, but the customer service was worth a few extra bucks to me (and I literally mean a few extra - like $6-7 from memory). Just check what you excess is before signing up.

what?! you claim for sunglasses? must be like the really expensive one right? I mean the excess fee itself probably around $250 at least

      • They were expensive ($380) and almost brand new unfortunately, so it was a bit of hurt pride too.

The excess was $100 from memory.

The lesson for me was the the likelihood of losing or destroying your sunglasses correlates directly to the amount you paid. $50 Morrissey ones are still going strong 2 years later. I suspect $10 servo sunnies would indestructible and if they're ugly, impossible to lose or have stolen despite your best efforts.

  • i went with World Nomads. Didn't need to claim though.

It's easy to get a discount online, just check retailmenot.com i think 10-15% off was pretty standard.

The only thing to be aware of is that if you want to extend your holiday, they will sell you a discounted policy for the remaining weeks. However, this is a separate policy, and any medical issues that presented themselves in the first policy, won't be covered on the second.

i.e. if you cut your foot on the first policy, and it gets infected on the second, you're not covered as it's a preexisting medical condition.

So if in doubt, buy longer from the start.

  • My family used Travel Insurance Direct few years ago on a trip to Japan, my daughter ended up in the emergency in Kyoto to have stitches on her head! Upon our return, the claiming process was quick and simple. We have been using them ever since. Highly recommended.

  • The free travel insurance from credit cards not good enough?
