Can my iPhone be fixed?

I dropped my iPhone 5 in the kitchen sink on Friday night. I grabbed it out immediately but, it seems, not quickly enough to avoid damage.
The old drying out in rice trick doesn't seem to have worked. I turned the phone back on and the image appears skewed and the touchscreen is unresponsive.
I don't really want to get a new phone now. I'd rather wait until the new iPhone is available.
Has anyone had any luck having a water damaged phone fixed? How much did it cost?

  • The fee according to my knowledge for an out of warranty service is $250 (via Apple). I have seen in a shopping center, iphone 5 repairs ranging from $180 to $200.

I'd definitely recommend swapping it at Apple, you're warranty will continue. Risking it at a shopping centre will void the warranty and will result in non Apple parts.

    • you're warranty will continue

Apple terms and conditions state that once liquid indicators are triggered, the warranty is pretty much void and Apple will treat all services as an out of warranty repair.
If they do agree to give OP an replacement refurb iphone it will be because of goodwill and not because of a clause in the warranty — either way the warranty will be void since it doesn't cover liquid damage.

They definitely will swap it, its for out of warranty service , which all water damaged phones are. Your warranty will continue.
The warranty is on the new phone.
    Done it before.

    $279 is the cost.

Be honest, tell them it's water damaged and all will be good. It's the same if you drop the phone and smash it. This is why I love Apple

  • Rice is not a fix for liquid damage. In many ways, it is a terrible thing to do. The uninformed may disagree with me on here.

It is not the liquid that causes the problems as most think. It is the impurities in the water that remain once the liquid has evaporated that cause the issue. Very very rarely is it the actual water that causes an issue, and if it was - the impurities in the water would have caused the problem later anyway.

The problem is corrosion caused by the impurities, and this is what you need to remove from the PCBs. CO contact cleaner or other similar solvent will clean these impurities off them. Once the corrosion starts, there is little you can do except replace those components.

Bleach can help with an iPhone, but I am not going to talk you through it - as it is not ethical and could possibly be illegal (not sure, I'm not a lawyer). If you don't know what I am talking about, Google is your friend.

The other thing you could do would be buy a cheap phone to use until the iPhone 6 (Air, or whatever) is released.

    • Who begged ukmark?
What he said regarding rice and corrosion is pretty spot on.

Can't really verify the bleach part though :)

  • Thanks for the replies everyone, I think I'll take it to the Apple shop this week and see how I go.

  • Or am I better to take it to Optus? Can you still get the Apple $250 replacement if phone is out of warranty (1.5 years old)?

    • Take it to apple, find out your options there first. Price depends on model AFAIK, not age.
