  • Anyone know if these are useful?

IE: easily able to transfer stuff from computer to phone and vice versa?

I have a USB otg that uses a microsd and it has difficulty with xferring

    • +2

      Yep,

Not sure of your question, are you trying to use this as a short USB cable to transfer stuff from computer to phone and vice versa?

That will not work, and you risk putting strain on the micro usb port on your phone.

The purpose of this USB drive is to transfer stuff from computer to drive and then plug it into your android device, and vice versa. You can also access files directly from the drive on your android device without transferring them over.

I use this drive with my nexus 7 all the time, and use the app Nexus Media importer, works like a charm.

      Hope I answered your question.

Would like to transfer photos and videos off of my nexus onto the drive. And then use the drive to view these photos and videos.

Basically because of the limited storage of my device I need somewhere to keep my stuff but have it readily viewable without needing to connect phone to computer.

I'm using Nexus Media importer too.

        • +1

Yep you can do that just fine - it shows up as a regular OTG USB on the phone, and as a regular Removable Storage device on the PC. It's just two interfaces to the same storage pool.

Don't think you can plug both ends in at the same time… not game to try as it sounds like an electrical problem waiting to happen.

    Awesome, thanks chum!

1+ vote to balance out the neg vote some idiot gave you. I hate (most) people. :/

      • +1

Cheers for being nice to me!

  • Will not ship, pickup only?

    • +4

MSY website is useless, you have to select the option "order online and deliver to your place" at the homepage or it will not give you shipping options. However I recommended you pick it up as I was quoted $10.95 to ship in VIC.

      • +1

Thanks for the comment. I would not have found the shipping option without it. $10.91 for Sydney CBD seems pretty steep, although the final price (for the 64) is still pretty good…

  • I have one of these OTG drives however is not recognised by my android phone. I have tried numerous Apps off Google play but still not recognised. You may want to do some research to see if it will work for you, or just take the risk.

What kind of phone do you use? Not all support USB OTG host capabilities. For example, the Nexus 4 doesn't.

On the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7, you need to be rooted and use Stickmount from Chainfire (on the Play Store), or use Nexus Media Importer.

Keep in mind that the kernel will need to support the file system, e.g., exFAT isn't usually supported, but FAT32 usually is.

      • +1

I have had no issues using usb OTG with an unrooted nexus 5 previously.

I use this plugin for total commander

        • +1

Yeah, you don't necessarily need to be rooted, as programs like "Nexus Media Importer" work.

But some phones don't support certain file systems, and others don't support OTG at all.

A good way of seeing if your phone supports OTG is to buy a cheap OTG cable for ~$1 or eEbay, so you can test it with a bog standard USB flash drive with a FAT file system.

Alternatively, if it's a more popular phone, then check out the compatibility list on Meenova's website.

  • I've got a couple of these, they work great on both phones SGnote2 and LG G2, plus windows and android tablets. USB 3.0 too ftw :-)

    • +2

It's USB 3.0 only on the regular USB port side - read speeds only (write is still pretty slow, around what USB 2.0 is capable of).

It's USB 2.0 on the phone side (Micro USB 3.0 is has extra pins on a wider connector).

  • How fast is the write speed from the usb3 side?

    • +1

      20MB/s

Note: this is within USB 2.0 capabilities.

Decent USB 3.0 drives can do well over 100MB/s.

      • Thanks for the info on USB3.0 write speeds… if I'm to get a USB3 drive, then I'll need that write speed for the many gigs of data I'll be transferring to the stick. Looks like this drive isn't what I'm after.

Here are the speeds for the 32GB model on a USB 3.0 PC port:

    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6YWMf0x5c-FamFnX0tlVzNJeGc/…

    • My results are a tad different from an original Surface Pro.

             Sequential Read : 109.034 MB/s
            Sequential Write : 56.220 MB/s
           Random Read 512KB : 105.254 MB/s
          Random Write 512KB : 25.127 MB/s
      Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 4.304 MB/s [ 1050.7 IOPS]

      Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 1.277 MB/s [ 311.7 IOPS]
      Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 5.270 MB/s [ 1286.5 IOPS]
      Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 1.945 MB/s [ 474.9 IOPS]

      Test : 50 MB [E: 0.0% (0.0/28.9 GB)] (x2)
      Date : 2014/09/10 8:32:28
      OS : Windows 8.1 Pro [6.3 Build 9600] (x64)

  • Bought one, cheers.

  • Bought one! Thanks

  • I hope the write speed of the 64 GB drive is faster than the 32.

  • No guarantee but exfat is supported on most android phones.

  • Do these have a hole so that I can attach it to a key ring?

    • Yep, a tiny hole.

  • Picked my 64gb today. Went home plug it into my Lappy .. Nothing.. tried 2 other comps. . Still nothing .. got a dud! Fork!
