Chromecast with Netflix

Just wondering with the ol' chromecast, is netflix and hulu a native app for it or do you still stream these from your pc or phone to it?

Also on a side note, i see you you can buy it through the google play store, can you use google play credit for this?

cheers

  • Netflix has it's own app.
I imagine that Hulu does too.. Google is your friend..

Yes, Chromecast works with Netflix and Hulu natively. You install the app on your phone/tablet etc and then send to Chromecast. It's not actually streaming from the phone to the Chromecast, it is sending the location of the stream to the Chromecast. So you can turn off your phone and the Hulu/Netflix stream will still continue.

You will need a DNS service (e.g. GetFlix) or a VPN to use these services. You will also need to setup a static route in your router to block Google's DNS server requests from Chromecast.

Neil beat me to it. ^
You can only control the Chromecast from your PC, phone, tablet. Pressing the little Cast button on the Netflix app from your phone will tell the Chromecast to download and launch the Netflix app and will wait for you to start playing something.
Netflix will only work if you set the DNS/VPN up through your router as Google has locked us out of changing the DNS settings on the device, Unless you install a custom Chromecast ROM.

  • cheers scuba, i was googling, however work blocks most of the helpful sites.

Its prob not what im after then by the sounds of it, i realise the whole point of it is streaming/casting from another device, but as it was hooked to my wifi i thought it might be able to run it without the need for a phone/pc/tablet.. similar to my wdtv or roku.

    Cheers

    • Still need another device, but it can run in the background, i.e. it's not mirroring so you can still use the other device as per normal.

  • Netflix works really good with Chromecast. I don't use Hulu. And I use Plex for all other media needs.
