Too much Apple Talk - What's your next phone?

With all the Apple topics being discussed thought I'd create a topic that's not about the new iPhone.

What phone will you buy next (or are waiting for)?

Currently have a Nexus 5, awaiting the new Nexus whatever it will be called.

LG G3. Waiting for the 15% off ebay deal and will buy the 32gb version for $500.

    • nice, upgrading from which phone?

      • Nexus 5. :D

        • +2

you'll be pleasantly impressed with the battery life of the g3 haha, only thing that bothered me with it was being unable to unlock the bootloader (I enjoy custom roms and rooting etc).

        • @beaver2233:
The thing that really bothers me is there is not enough magnet on the back of the G3.

Cant fully utilize my Logitech +Drive mount.

    • I almost got G3 but then got OnePlus as you get 64gb rather than 32GB and the specs are the same aside from the 1080 screen and larger battery in OnePlus

    • I recently bought LG G3 and I Am really happy. I used to be apple user.

  • +1

No clue. I just got my Nexus 5 a month ago so I won't be changing anytime soon.

  • +2

    Samsung GAlaxy Mega 6.3

Not a phone for me but for elderly uncle with hyperopia.

    • wow that's huge haha

    • +8

Don't use this phone in a bank. Putting it to your head will conceal your identity.

  • +6

    5S to 6Plus

    • massive step up in screen size!

      • +5

and a massive step up on e-peen. haha

    • +29

      and a massive welcome to 2012! :)

        • What you said is true… the design was inspired by iphone… BUT we lapped you in terms of UI, and features.

          P.S.

          @CMichael

6+ is actually 1080 according to gsmarena

        • @ProjectZero:

Design, inputs, gestures, accelerometer, light sensors, appstore.. etc, etc.

Imagine what smartphones would be like if we didn't have the introduction of the iPhone?

        • +1

          @massafiri:

Yup agreed, but Android has also contributed alot, quick example is the implementation of the widget systems to which iphone has started using for iOS 6/7 (i believe somewhere around there).

There is also NFC, which iphone was going to implement but decided against it until android phones started to have them.

        • +14

          @ProjectZero @massafiri:

Can we just agree that competition makes both platforms better!?

        • +1

          @Jonaseymour:

          I agree to that.
Jonaseymour - Off to Palestine! You're needed.

        • Touchscreen gui still not invented by Apple…

          HTC wallaby c. 2002:

        • +5

          @Tgb:

Apple doesn't invent anything new. They just mature it to a standard that makes it genuinely enjoyable to use.

I remember using Windows phone 6 with touchscreen inputs and just hating everything about it.

The first time I got an iPhone, it was perfect. Touch inputs were responsive, effortless and accurate. The GUI was made for fingers.

From the Wallaby picture, you can see literally see the tiny buttons all over the screen. Hardly innovative. They just took a computer a shrunk it down without even considering the inputs.

        • @ProjectZero:

Or the drop down notification tray…

        • The new iphone's design is actually just a combination of the 1st gen iphone and the 5/5S.

        • @Izefyre: agree with you!!!
Can imagine how the corners will travel again

  • +13

My next phone doesn't exist yet, but it will be an Android phone!.

  • +14

    Nexus X/Nexus 6 !!

    • +1

hoping for some proper/solid leaks soon along with the Nexus 9. If it has a 2800mAh battery I'll be stoked. Only thing about the nexus 5 I'm not overly happy with. Also waiting for some more info on Android L

      • What's your average SOT time?

        • average would be 3.5, max 4hrs

        • SOT?

        • @Risser: screen on time.

        • @beaver2233:
          thanks.

I have a nexus 5 running cyanogen rom, and have no probs with battery on a days use. I took it to work today with less then 30% battery and had to throw it on the charger at around 2pm with 8% left. SOT is 3h31m right now.

I'm now interested to see how a normal day would go.

        • @Risser: yeah, i have slimkat running on mine - think my main problem is poor reception and overloaded wifi at university…vary rarely my phone lasts the whole day (9-4/5). That said, my S4 didn't have a problem when i had that for a while. Performance wise, nothing beats the Nexus 5 in my opinion.

        • @beaver2233:
Thought about flashing another radio? You could try a few others to see if you get better reception based on your provider.

        • @Risser: probably should've rephrased what i said, haha, the s4 also had issues with reception (but still managed to last the day). And yeah, i've tried flashing a few more radios but yeah didn't help. Just a common problem around wollongong uni and virgin (telstra seems okay for the people that are with them). thanks though.

        • nexus 5 running paranoid android 4.4.4/r63 franco kernel/greenifying apps can get me 10-11hrs with 3.5-4 hours screen on time

Before using custom ROMS/franco kernel/greenifying apps (basically rooted with stock rom), I used to only get 7-8hrs with 3 hrs screen on time

        • @exp1: Thanks exp1, might give it a try.

        • @beaver2233: do you play any games?

        • @superm86: sometimes. When I do, I get 2-3hrs screen time though. Battery is getting worse and worse; might have to resort to a factory reset, even though there doesn't seem to be any rogue apps.

        • @beaver2233: You have good battery life I guess. Mine does not do 3 hrs on avg. Well you can not really compare the battery life that easily though, lots of other factors.

        • @superm86: yeah lots of variables. All I can say is this 1+1 is miles better for battery! At 60% with 2.5hrs screen on time today.

    • Nexus 6 master race reporting in!

      Assuming it's good…

  • +2

    Note2 -> 6Plus.
I love my Note BUT i hate that plastic feel of my Note2, even though i know the Note4 is supposed to feel a lot nicer I'm just over the plastic feel.

    • -1

you know u can get a case over ur note 2 that will change the feel right??

      • +2

A case will make the phone thicker. Some people prefer to use their phone sans case.

        • +7

yeah but im not gonna buy a new phone because my current one doesnt "feel" good

        • @jordyred96:

Here's what I learnt; When you're doing a business, its the smallest things that can make the biggest difference overall. I can't believe how well it applies to everything not just business related..

        • -1

@jordyred96: It's an issue for him, who cares what you predict you might do in the same situation?

        • Not very much - the S-View cases made especially for the Notes actually replace the back cover of your phone.

        • +4

Sorry, you have a Note 2 and are worried about a case increasing the size?

        • STFU @diji1

      • +1

I love my Note 2, especially now that I have loaded Cyanogenmod onto it.

I have an Otter box for mine that made it quite chunky. I recently took it off and much prefer it as it.

        • I was almost about to ditch my Note 2 because of slow Touchwiz(rooted and removed bloatware) but then Cyanogenmod made me awesome ….although i think it is bit bulky

    • I hate Samsung's build quality too, but why ditch a perfectly good operating system? Why not just get an HTC One M8? It's brilliant piece of hardware.

I'm still using my white HTC One X naked and it looks every bit as brand new as it did 2.5 years ago.

    • I'm thinking of moving to the 6Plus - how is life with a massive phone? Kind of worried about it being a bit unwieldy and cumbersome, despite the obvious benefit of more screen real estate.

  • +3

    Note 5

  • I will be getting the iPhone 6.

  • +2

a galaxy note 4 would be sweet

  • +2

Z3 compact. If the Z1c is anything to go by, sticking with a screen size that fits in my pocket (without having to buy new clothes) and a design that's comfortable to hold.

Good specs, waterproof, SD card, great battery, no heavy OEM UI modifications.

    • +1

yeah, z3c actually looks pretty decent - shame every flagship phone continues to up the screen size. 5.2" is the max i'll go (even 5" on the nexus 5 is slightly too big for me).

    • I'm waiting for this as well..

    • I have found that my newer shirts do not fit my phone. All my older shirts do. Pocket size has been shrinking. Very inconvenient.

Looking for a replacement now for my ZTEv9

  • +4

im waiting for the successor of the lumia 1020 aka lumia 1030. hopefully it has wireless charging like my 920.

  • +4

Have a Galaxy Note 3, gives me a realistic 'all day' battery life. Calls, lots of GPS navigation, heavy internet use and still at least 20% remaining with the brightness at 100%. Has a stylus which I crave for badly, and a huge screen. That's all I want.

    • -1

i wish my phone last close to that :P though i don't think i could handle a phone that large haha

      • +3

You get used to it, then everything else seems tiny. I used to be a big iPhone fan, had every model from the 2G to the 5S.

Went to Windows Phone (Lumia 830) and loved it but the lack of 3rd party applications really hurt.

Tried the Note 2 and loved it, mostly because it had a stylus and a damn good one too (Active stylus like the Microsoft Surface Pro) which I use religiously, being a stylus person from way back when Palm Pilots were all the rage and people knew what a PDA was. The genuine Note 2 case was awesome too, rubberised sides that didn't add too much bulk meant that it made the phone 'stupid proof' enough for me to use, as I am, by my own admission, a clumsy boobasaurus.

Was lucky enough that my partner bought me a Note 3 for my birthday and it really just builds on the Note 2, 1080 screen, better battery, more vivid colors, VERY fast. She also purchased me a Tech 21 Impact Tactical case (https://www.tech21.com/impact-tactical-samsung-galaxy-note-3…) which has protected the phone after many falls and adds very little bulk to the form factor. A Glass screen protector which is stunning. Protects the screen and you REALLY don't know its there, not like those shitty plastic screen protectors that just look like a dogs breakfast after a month.

        • +1

yeah i guess it's all relative really haha, same thing happens when i used my nexus 7 tablet for a few hours, pick up my phone (nexus 5) and like holy shit its small haha - and fully agree on the glass screen protector, have one now and so much better/nicer than plastic screen protectors!

        • +3

          hahaha a clumsy boobasaurus :)

        • You had a 5S then a Lumia, then a Note 2 and now a Note 3?
5S being a year old puts a 1 year time frame on all that!

          Wow

        • +2

          @Woodyg22:

Ahh! I apologise! I had a 5, not the 5S, just went through the timeframe myself and it seemed wrong. Had the Lumia 820 from release date (Nov/Dec 2012) until mid 2013, then went to a note 2 then to a note 3 in May this year.

If you haven't tried a winmobile phone, have an open mind and give it a go, I was a huge fan of their maps/navigation application, and the simple but intuitive ui but the lack of 3rd part support (non existant ANZ app i'm looking at you!) I had to move on.

        • +1

Since having my Note 3 I really struggle using small phones now.

Also can confirm battery lasts all day with heavy use (tethering, games, etc.)
Got another backup battery for $25 that is handy when I forget to charge overnight :)

  • Something that isn't a Windows phone…my 620 started out fantastic but now starting to have issues with it. This is my second WP and enough is enough.

    • interesting, I haven't had one issue with all my wps, from htc Mozart and lumia 920 and 520. its not a software issue, it must be hardware. wp has one of the most stable os's out of the big 3.

      • I did the 8.1 update and it totally screwed everything up on my phone. Had to do a factory reset to get it working properly again. Wasn't very happy because in turn I also lost a lot off stuff.

        • +1

Was it the proper 8.1 update (which should be out now along with Nokias Cyan firmware which includes device specific optimizations), or was it via the developers preview (which was essentially beta software).

Also if you have 8.1 you shouldnt have really lost anything (except some data from apps that havent been updated for 8.1 yet)

  • +6

Nexus 6 :D. I wonder if posting it would constitute a deal or not though ….

  • -1

    iphone 6+

  • I plan to keep my 2013 moto g for another year. I don't know if I'll hold out that long though. Plus, anything could happen to it. That said, roughly how long do you keep your phone for till you shell out for new one?

    • +1

I've generally kept mine until they've broken or they've gone so slow compared to other phones that it's noticeable. Had that problem with my HTC Desire (more so because of the lack of internal memory) and then grabbed Nexus almost 2 years ago now. It's still great and I don't see the need to upgrade for a while. The techie inside me wants the new Nexus though.

      • Nexus 4 or 5?

My 4s still going without any hiccups. Wondering when it will start to die so I won't feel guilty if I replace it.

        • if he got it 2 years ago it can't possibly be the nexus 5 ;)

        • The correlation between your 4S dying and upgrading to iOS 8 might be quite high (purely based off very negative articles towards it that I have seen)

  • +2

Currently using android phone, but battery life is really poor despite not so heavy usage. Looking at lumia 930 because it looks pretty and hopefully it wont die on me by the end of the day :).

    • Good choice, get it in green it looks amazing!

Looks the same as the iPhone 6 at a quarter of the price

    • Yeah and also runs at a quarter of the speed as well :)

  • iPhone 6 4.7" :]

  • +1

Just bought LG G pro 2 and I am in love with it
    Was using note 2

  • +1

tempted by the LG G3, but the promise of the Sony XPERIA Z3 coming in the next month or so is prompting me to wait a little longer; or the Lenovo VIBE Z2 Pro if I can get my hands on one.

    • What "promise" is that?

To be Frank, the z2 was a disappointment. The camera had a very high mp count, but blind tests indicate that the photo quality simply sucks compared to other flagships, including last years Galaxy S4. 4k video recording renders the camera too hot for it to function after a random time, and Sony hasn't fixed this issue. The front facing speakers are simply tinny compared to the m8s. Besides the camera software, the phone doesn't have much other software that actually makes a difference. Yes, it's water proof, but so is the Galaxy s5.

Sorry, I'm just a disappointed z2 customer. Should have read and viewed the reviews and comparisons beforehand. Based on the z2s performance, I have little confidence in the z3

  • +2

Galaxy S2 -> LG G3. The S2 has served me well and its still cranking along, though the slow camera and ui is starting to get to me. The battery in it gives me about 1 hour screen time and I can't be bothered replacing it. Bought the G3 today taking advantage of the ebay 15% off sale. Looking forward to my new phone!

  • +1

Was going to grab the new Nexus this year but these eBay sales have made me broke. That and the fact that my Nexus 4 is still going strong!

    • I've a nexus 4 too! It's performance is absolutely fine for me, smooth as. What made you want to get a new phone?

  • +3

I've still got my Galaxy nexus from early 2012.. Waiting for nexus (6?)

    • Another Galaxy Nexus user here….considering a Note 4/Note Edge but am unsure if I want to go back to TouchWiz, and the size.

Whatever I end up with it will have to have a removable battery and either a huge memory or a card slot (worst part of the nexus experience).

  • Nexus # or whatever the equivalent of OnePlusOne is.
