Home theatre centre speaker question / suggestions?

I bought a cheap Pioneer HTP-072 home theatre system from JB hifi a while ago…

Overall, I'm happy with the system (4 x HDMI inputs, 4K Passthrough, etc)…but I'm pretty disappointed with the sound quality from the centre speaker.

Eg. if I'm watching an action movie, I can hardly hear the dialogue, but the action sequences are WAY too loud. (looks like a common problem with budget HTIB systems)
I've tried mucking around with pretty much every setting that the manual recommends, but it hasn't made much of a difference.

I'm thinking of buying a better centre speaker (but I'm no audiophile), so can anyone recommend the best bang for buck centre speaker upgrade (around / under $80?)
happy to buy 2nd hand - but have no idea what brands to look for, what Wattage, Ohms, etc?!

thanks in advance.

If you tried turning up the centre speaker, you need to be watching a bluray/dvd/file that has 5.1 sound or greater I believe. Otherwise it won't do anything if it's just stereo 2.1. Just something to check :)

  • In movies with 5.1, all main dialogue is always through the center speaker. This is why you may need to boost centre speaker volume.

To match your set, you want one with 6 ohm and also no real point getting a speaker rated higher than 100w with what you have…although realistically on entry level cheap sets you probably won't even use close to 50w given the high distortion on these things.

I'd say find something on Ebay, can probably get something decent for $20 as no one wants second hand speakers.
