PayPal/eBay Buyer Protection

I am wanting to bid on a used mobile phone on eBay with Paypal as payment. I was under the impression that paying with Paypal automatically entitled me to their buyer protection insurance, but according to the terms (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/Marketing/popu…)

"How do I know if I'm purchasing an eligible Item? The following applies in addition to section 13.8, below:
Items purchased on eBay:

Look for the buyer protection message in the eBay listing in the right hand column under the Buy Safely banner. If you see this message, and you meet the eligibility requirements, then your purchase is covered by PayPal Buyer Protection. You can also view this message after you complete your purchase by logging in to your eBay account, going to "my eBay" and looking at the listing. If the listing does not include the buyer protection message, then it is not eligible for PayPal Buyer Protection.
The buyer protection message will vary based on the eBay website. The following is an example of the PayPal Buyer Protection message"

However I couldn't see any buyer protection message or any "Buy safely banner" on the used phone I'm interested in, and in fact, I went on and looked at a bunch of other random electronics on eBay which qualified as "eligible purchases" for Buyer Protection adn had payment with PayPal, both brand new and used, and the large majority didn't seem to have any buyer protection message or banner.

So is it the case that all this stuff has no buyer protection from Paypal???

  • I think the buyer protection is better when the seller is verified by paypal.

    • So if the seller is not verified, you get nothing??? I can't see any Buyer Protection message on popular retail stores like Dick Smith, The Good Guys, Kogan, DWI…

  • I'm not 100% sure how it actually works but if you use your credit card then at least you have their protection.
