Help needed deciding which car

Would appreciate some help deciding on which car to get. Have looked at two Nissan Tiida hatches (before everyone moans about this car, I am only one step away from the blue rinse set and drive very sedately - so the car is perfect for me).

The first car is 2010 has 60,000klms on the clock (mainly highway driving)and is immaculate.

The 2nd car is 2006 has 15,000 (yes this is correct - it was Grandma and Grandpas car) and is also immaculate.

The first car is $9,900 (don't know yet how low they will go). The 2nd car they will accept $8,000 for it.

Both cars have log books and both are agreeable to having an RACQ inspection done.

I will be keeping the car for at least 10 years and resale value doesn't matter to me.

Which car would you buy?

  • Here is a link to a Used car guide Cars Guide and another Drive

I'm guessing that the 2010 model you are looking at isn't a face lifted model as detailed in the article.

    • Yes the car is the new one. Front grill is different.

2010 model at 60000km is nothing either. The stagnant 15000k might be worse. With modern oils & regular servicing you could expect 300 000 kms without too much trouble. The 2010 will probably have more modern features/ safety,go for that.

Both seem expensive to me for second hand cars?
    I bought a brand new Mazda2 drive-away including a year's rego and stamp duty etc for $14,500
    (see my experience here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/160772

    • I don't want to spend over $10,000 if I can help it as the car will be garaged.

      • No probs. Take into account when buying second hand privately you'll be liable for stamp duty (3% or $300 on $10,000) as well as rego if it doesn't have much left.

      • Oops that should read - not be garaged.

the Mazda 2 and the Nissan Tiida are different classes of car.
Not really comparable in a situation like this.

The 2010 model has cruise control, the 2006 doesn't. This is good for driving on the freeway. Just drove my daughters Yaris home from the Gold Coast to Brisbane and my arthritic hip was not happy.

  • Get 2010
    however 10k for 20k car(Price when new)is a bit expensive
If it was me I would have gone for all time whirlpool favourite Falcon on gas.

    • I know what you mean by the price. But secondhand prices for cars seems to be expensive for what is paid new for them. Even second hand Yaris and Micra's seem expensive. I only want a small hatch for going 2 work/shopping and odd trip to the coast. I thought the Tiida would be more comfortable for this as its a bit bigger than the Yaris/Micra and has a 1.8lt engine. The Corollas also seem to be pricey. Any suggestions from anyone would be gratefully received as I am totally confused now.

      • Sorry didn't mean to confuse you.
Go with car you like end of the day its you who will be driving it.
also small cars have better resale than large cars.
        hope this helps.

You answered your own question about the price :)

If they indeed paid $20k, then $10k after 4 years is 50% depreciation. Not too far off the money, even most $60k cars are around $30k 3-4 years later. Some cheaper, generally a lot more than 60,000km on the dial though.

"Hated" cars like Commodore & Falcon are an exception to the rule. Struggle to give them away (great 2nd hand buy, horrible 2nd hand sell).

  • Tiida is a value for money car. Even though it is not the best, it lies in the segment of Corolla/mazda 3/ i30/ focus(much roomier than competitors).
Being an owner of one, i think you should go for the 2010 model as the cruise control is very handy in motorway driving.

  • Plus one, get a cruise control.

  • Choice of Tiida is a sound one. If you could get the 2010 model for the same price as the 06, that might be better.

Top Gear magazine said this of the car:
"Replaced the Pulsar. Would probably sell better if it were called Pulsar."
