Defensive Driving Course - Any good ones that people have been on? Any recommendations on Value for Money ones?

Hey Everyone,

I was trying to find a defensive driving course around Melbourne that doesn't suck and is not a completely ripoff.

Hopefully I can learn a thing or two about good driving from the course, has anyone here done one of these ?

Any recommendations ?

I tried searching for deals here, there have been none, and before someone suggests I look on UDEMY, I'm after a really physical course not just virtual one.

Realistically what are you hoping to achieve out of this- because some of the courses marketed as defensive driving, I felt were probably more just an excuse to go out on a skid pan and learn to drive quickly through cones.

I've attended a few in NSW over the years:

Honda - this was a partial theory course with some practical (sit in the car and see how long it takes to stop in different conditions from different speeds). Did this in school days though so might be different.

Mercedes - this was a skidpan day where you drive Mercedes cars using the plastic tyres (i.e. to simulate low grip environment) with the focus on learning to control the car; there was also a braking session to learn how to brake with/without ABS (and the clipping point); and then some various fun sessions on sitting in new MB cars to experience safety features like blind spot warning, etc… and some track time in various low to mid-range MB cars (e.g. SLK350, C200, Smart, etc).

MRT Skidpan Day - this was definitely performance driving oriented on a skidpan where you BYO car, instructors sit with you and help you learn to control the car, and you are learning things like how to initiate slides/drifts, J-turns, etc

(forgot name of company) MDTC - on the Marulan track, learn how to control the car with instructors walking you through the track and then sitting with you for some laps to help you improve your drive, learning with/without stability control, etc.

That all being said, I've also heard good things about the AAMI one since it's free if you're a customer and under 25 (not sure if this is you).

    • Thanks for taking the time to respond Jace

You seem to have done a few courses. Good

Realistically what are you hoping to achieve out of this-

Improve my driving in the sense that makes me a safer(Not Faster) driver on the road, Learn some pro tips about how to handle different situations on the road and how to assess and react to situations.

      • Fair enough- typically those courses are skidpan/braking type things (e.g. how to handle the car when it loses grip, and how braking with ABS works, etc).

Who is your car insurance with? From memory, both AAMI and NRMA offer some kind of safer driving courses.

  • Here's another company,,,
Does anyone here have any experience with them..?

They operate out of the springvale race course.
