Travel insurance for non travel activity

Hi,

Just want to get some opinions on my quirky situation. Someone reared into my car at a red light, so it was put in for repair by the guy's insurer and I was given a Hertz car for the repair period.

Needless to say, the hire car comes with $6300ish excess should there's any damage to it and I don't want to chance it so I'm thinking of getting some insurance cover for it. I know there're car rental excess insurance policies out there; but with all the travel insurance discounts going around, it seems to be cheaper to get a comprehensive travel insurance policy.

Thing is I'm not sure if a travel insurance policy would cover me for the period since I'm not actually traveling, i.e. on a holiday, but rather just carrying out my normal day to day driving.

Have anyone been successful doing the same thing? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

  • It should be covered by your car insurance. Your car insurance should know you are getting a rental car paid by the other car's insurance.

  • It sounds like you want to be tricky about it. I would not be evasive about it whatsoever. I would ask insurance companies outright about it. Otherwise you will never be sure that you are insured if you are not 100% open and honest about the situation and the cover that you want.

  • What ever, get it in writing otherwise as far as an ins co is concerned, it may not be in agreement later. Eg an email, screen shot etc.

  • If your own insurer won't wear that massive excess, I would also speak to the rental company about you contributing a few bucks extra for excess reduction, I'm sure they'd be happy to oblige (read: take your money). FWIW, Hertz have always been very approachable IME.

The travel insurance thing wouldn't work, because you generally have to be a certain distance from home before it kicks in. Ours is 100km.
