Bargains requiring membership fee.

Unlike with DealsExtreme, CotD and The Reject Shop, which are well-known hubs for bargains, Costco's many bargains are only available to those who have paid a $60 annual membership fee. After paying the $60 annual fee, one would expect the majority of items at Costco to be much cheaper than other stores. I wonder: What's to stop OzBargain being flooded with the many individual Costco "bargains"?

Along the lines of this Costco issue, what policy has OzBargain implemented to prevent or limit the posting of bargains exclusive to Centurion Card Holders? Such "bargains" include free nights at luxury hotels around the world, and buy-one-get-one-free tickets for international flight, for a mere $4,300 annual fee.

Sure, that is an extreme example, but what if Cosco were to raise their annual fee to $120, $200, $500, and perhaps with proportional increases in the attractiveness and discount of their "bargains"? Where does the line get drawn?

From the organisational standpoint of this website, it would make sense to either remove or seperate the Costco "bargains", and well as all others requiring a "membership fee", from the regular bargains, both to draw the collective attention of those with memberships, and to not flood the site for those without relevant memberships.

  • It depends on the take-up of Costco membership in Melbourne (and other cities they launch in). If there is a large portion of Ozbargain members who have Costco memberships then I think there could be valid Costco postings in the future.

We've had popular bargains limited to certain demographics or local areas before. So Costco shouldn't be any different if the posting is actually a valid bargain. It's upto the community as a whole to decide rather then just grumpy individuals who don't want to pay a $60 membership fee.

I think there are good arguments for both sides. It reminds me when msy just came out… or when we get fluidtek bargains.
really the post should be "[MELB] Cosco - TH Polo shirts half price". or something. Just so that non melb people can look over that deal.

As for the fee, i'd only join if i lived near cosco. Considering Coles is a 5min walk from my house, i doubt a cosco can move close enough to get my money. However, as per zhenjie's comments, if there are enough votes, then that shows the store has the demographics.

I vote stay, but make the heading clearer.

  • Costco Fees are only $60 - they are not $4,300. And why speculate on what they may raise to in the future?? Live in the present. On your theory, we would not post any bargains because in 2 months time this TV might be cheaper, and we would have all these comments saying - don't buy this now, it will be cheaper in 2 months. Also not all posted bargains are relevant to everyone - If there is only a bargain at a Sydney store, should we not post that too because its only relevant to the people in Sydney as they dont live in the relevant place.

  • Between $60 and $4,300, where does the line get drawn? An existing bank credit card giving larger benefits—"bargains"—than Costco for $250 annual membership fee?

Your examples of location-specific offers is fair enough. As a community, our solution is simple: Requiring that it be noted in the title if a bargain is geographically restricted.

Like Davo1111, the main reason I've not joined Costco is the geography. The $60 membership fee is not an issue for me personally. However, no-one has addressed this particular point:

After paying the $60 annual fee, one would expect the majority of items at Costco to be much cheaper than other stores. I wonder: What’s to stop OzBargain being flooded with the many individual Costco “bargains”?

I don't know too well how the Costco membership works, but for that fee I would expect they send out some catalogue, or at least an E-mail, or have a website informing members of bargains.

This is like the Fluidtek issue that has cropped up recently of listing every single item that is a potential "bargain" in a seperate post. This is an problem you [SydGuy] have expressed some strong opinions about, and I agree. Costco, though, has the potential to be worse since it is both [currently] geographically limited as well as requiring a membership fee.

    TL;DR: Suggestions for preventative measures?

  • Interesting question which I am in two minds about my opinion. I can see the point about Costco "bargains" flooding the site, which I wouldn't like to see at all.

But, seeing as how it is so new to Australia I don't think many know exactly what will be on offer and how "bargainish" it will be. (ok, I made that word up I am sure).

I'm curious about Costco as twice now I have driven past and seen amazing amounts of people queuing to enter and was thinking of joining just to see what all the hype is about and if it really is as cheap as many say. At the moment, I would love to see some of the prices so am keen to see some postings.

Definitely would like to see the [Melb] Costco prefix on any posts though regardless.

Prefixing state-limited bargains should be mandatory - it would make it so much easier to find out early on if we saw [Melb] [Syd] [Adel] etc at the beginning of non-nation wide bargains.

  • I agree with the above posts, i think there needs to be a memo (perhaps stated BEFORE you press submit) to explain how to write a title properly. Seems to be an issue recently with misleading or confusing titles.

Mods: Scotty/Huey/Tea - i'll be happy to update http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:deal_posting_guideline… to add the title bit about [Melb] [Syd] [Adel] etc… do you guys like the idea???

Maybe I should start posting Entertainment Book bargains too…

After all, 50% off a meal from a top class restaurant is certainly a bargain, and Entertainment Book membership is only $5 more than Costco !!!

    • Perfect example.

    • Excellent point.

    • +1

Well the difference between that is when people get the Entertainment Book they KNOW what vouchers are in it. With Costco they don't send a catalogue or inform members of bargains, so if something is truly a bargain at Costco then its nice to know about it. Just because it doesn't suit you doesn't mean it doesn't suit others.

Perhaps try posting one bargain and be a positive contribution to the site instead of bitching all the time.

      • oh god, burn.

      • This is your second ad hominem in this thread alone. There is no need for personal attacks here.

With Costco they don’t send a catalogue or inform members of bargains, so if something is truly a bargain at Costco then its nice to know about it.

That seems like an issue with membership benefits, if anything.

Just because it doesn’t suit you doesn’t mean it doesn’t suit others.

You seem way too defensive about your Costco membership. The main point of contention here is not Costco itself, but how it should be represented on OzBargain.

        • I don't even have a Costco membership….

          • @zhenjie: My mistake then.
You seem really defensive about Costco.

            • @TimeOrMoney: So?

Not everyone is anti-Costco or against posting Costco deals on Ozbargain. The community as a whole will decide what is a bargain and what becomes acceptable. Not you.

Every point you've made about Costco has been speculation and extreme comparisons. There hasn't even been a 'flood' of Costco postings yet and I really doubt there will be.

              • @zhenjie: Indeed, let's leave it to the wider OzBargain community to consider. The two of us have been the loudest in here. I'll stay out of this thread for some days. The concern has been raised, and we'll see how Costco's popularity develops.

The suggetion below by quackster seems potentially useful though, if scotty wants to consider it.

    Simple solutions:

    • When posting a bargain, the poster should be able to choose which states the bargain is valid for (or make it Australia wide)
    • Members can choose to see bargains available in their own state, any states of their choice or Australia wide
    • Allow members to block bargains from individual stores appearing in the list (eg. Costco/Fluidtek) if they don't want them.

    Problem solved.
