I have one which clips around the mains wire in the meter box. This is good, as it counts all power such as stoves, hot water, lights etc.

The web based option is great for understanding your consumption over time, and by time of day. The real time meter is good for knowing when you are using too much. For example I can see the kids leaving the bathroom heater on while I am making breakfast because the power usage shoots up by 1000watts.
We have had our power use go from 23kWh day down to 18 thanks to this and swapping LEDs for 6 halogens.
My local library lets you borrow a power consumption device for free which is quite useful in testing your electronics. All my appliances were fairly good in standby for the exception of a remote control fan that was using a good deal of energy just sitting there.
