The First in a Wave of Cheap Win8.1 Tablets

Not a deal because it's brand new and obviously at full price but still might be of interest to someone in the market for a new tablet. I was just reading about this PendoPad 8" Windows Tablet (credit LifeHacker) that apparently comes on sale starting Thursday 25th of September at Target around the country for only $199. It's rumoured that these devices are apparently embedded/CE and not full Win8.1 but I guess time will tell when it's actually released. What does everyone think? Does this price point entice anyone?

  • Win 8.1 cheapo tablets are worthless. I have one - an Asus Vivotab with similar specs. Explorer takes a second or 2 to load. EXPLORER. Pointless. Its barely functional. I'm chucking it and going for a Galaxy Tab S 10.5". Windows just doesn't work outside of a desktop/laptop/maybe server.

    • I disagree. Cheap Win 8.1 tablets can be perfectly functional if you use them for what they were designed for. I have a Dell Venue 8 Pro (~$180 refurb from a deal here) that is zippy and responsive for light tasks like MS Office, surfing regular webpages, sending emails, etc.

If you're going to be doing heavy multitasking or cpu-intensive tasks, then it definitely isn't the right device for you.

  • 1GB RAM running Windows 8.1. Hmm…

  • PendoCrap tablets are awful, but I definitely won't pay full price. Lenovo has a cheapo Win8.1 8" for about that price range, much better.

16GB of storage too. Fairly low spec and We've seen how bad the Pendo droid tabs were at battery life.

I've seen cheaper tabs (whitebox) with double the RAM and storage, though of course Pendo is a local brand which has the Aussie tax applied to it.

I'd wait and see what the other heavyweights will come up with — Acer, Toshiba, Dell and Lenovo will probably have better options.
