VoIP Modem Router Suggestions Please?

We're currently running netcomm nb5plus4 modem router and Netgear WGR613VAL voip and wireless router (we selected this voip device at the time because it gave us wireless connectivity, which we didn't otherwise have.)

They're both fairly long in the tooth so we are looking at replacing them. We were looking at D-Link dsl 2890AL wireless router modem but it doesn't have voip capacity, and while we COULD plug the netgear into it, sound quality with it has always been fairly poor …. we'd always put it down to the actual quality of the line, and had pretty much given up using it, but would like to keep the option available.

Can anyone recommend a reliable voip modem router that performs well please? Price is not that critical - we just want something that is going to do the job properly and be decent quality. Needs to be available in Australia.

  • I hear the Billion 7800 series are great. I'm in a similar boat and will probably upgrade to one of these when time permits.

  • Will look into it. Thanks. :)

  • Best advice is to have voip system separate to the modem.

Get Siemens Gigaset for your VoIP phone
and Netgear D6200 for your router.

  • Ended up going with the D-link, because there were a few questionable reviews on the Netgear, including here; the D0link has more usb ports, which we need, and got a really good price from JB, where we had some vouchers to spend . Will look into the Siemens Gigaset though yukonit. Many thanks to you both.

  • I'm very impressed with the performance of my TP-Link TD-VG3631, which I've had for around a year. It's very configurable, has very good VOIP handling, excellent wireless output and it has improved my connection speed somewhat.

They are regularly seen for under $100. As for separate VOIP, as so many people seem to favour, my opinion is that these Gigasets etc. are way overpriced for what they are and not worthy of mention on Ozbargain.

  • Each time I've gone to purchase a new modem/router/switch, I check out security features first. All have flaws. However the brand that comes up with the least shortcomings, always seems to be Draytek. They cost more, but every one I have purchased has been rock-solid and extremely reliable. In fact I still own the first Draytek ADSL(1) modem I purchased years ago. The one time I went off that path and used another brand, I regretted it - but that's another story.

You can compare the different models at www.warcom.com.au - whether you purchase there is up to you - there's a lot of negatives on Whirlpool. I've ordered from them twice and only had one minor hiccup, which they quickly corrected.

Whatever you buy, remember you should try and match the equipment. In other words, your VoIP phones may not work with the modem you decide on. Warcom (at least in the past) has known which work best together.
