Looking for Advice from Wine Aficionados - $100 to Spend on a Bottle of Red

Hi guys

I am attending a 50th birthday party for someone that likes their wine and I'd like to get them a decent bottle of red as a gift.

I can spend up to around $100, but I have no idea what I am looking for. Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help

Most "Wine Aficionados" I know would tell you that if your spending more then $20 max on a bottle of wine your paying to much. Also wine is very fickle, id ask someone who is close to them what they drink. Id personally get a mixed dozen from Grays, sometimes discovering that unknown wine and loving it is better than an expensive one you have had before; 1/12 has to decent right?

  • Thanks Cypher - I'll look into that.

Yalumba "The Octavius" Shiraz or yalumba "Single Site Light Pass" Shiraz.

    • Thanks Puska, will add these to the shortlist.

    for $100 i always recommend

    Ata Rangi Pinot Noir
    Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier

they're the best of their kind in aust/nz :)

Langmeils 'Freedom' oldest shiraz in the southern hemisphere……..top drop

    • Thanks Orion. Seems to be pretty rare - sold out everywhere I've looked online. I'll ask a few stores nearby, but do you have any suggestions on where I may find this?

      Edit: I'm in Sydney

    • I second this for cache value due to the age of the vines. Last time I had it was yeaaaars ago. Superb.

This magnum is $145 currently with free shipping. Over budget, but sure to impress! http://vinomofo.com/wines/red-wine/two-hands-lily-s-garden-s…

If you want to get something recognisable, St Henri isn't half bad.

Agree that it'd be best to find out what the person likes first.
My two cents for red varietals:
Shiraz - Mount Langi Ghiran 'Langi' (~$85 at Dan's) or Jasper Hill Georgia's Paddock ($87 at Dan's)
Cabernet - Katnook Odyssey, also ~$85 at Dan's or Vintage Cellars
Pinot - Anything from by Farr, Bannockburn or William Downie (all in the $60-$90 bracket)
    Good luck!

  • Thanks everyone for your suggestions and help. I have a few in mind now. Cheers!

  • Anything by Torbreck usually presents well. The wine is good but the bottle is spectacular and they still cork (I think..)

    • Nice bottle, what a wank

      • It's a gift. Wank it up I say.

  • Why not try getting a wine that isn't from Australia or New Zealand.

There's heaps of amazing reds from Chile… Look for Santa Rita, Valdivieso etc.

WOCA imports these, not sure if they sell privately though

  • Id rather you spend $100 and get me a case of something from here http://www.getwinesdirect.com/red-wines

I have had some truly fantastic reds and whites from them, some from as little as $6 a bottle

I have tried it on a mate of mine who is a wine snob and wont drink anything under $50 a bottle
His favorite wine on a recent visit was a cab sav, that I had decanted into an empty $70 Taylors bottle .
The actual wine he was drinking cost me $6
I did this 3 times and he still doesn't know.

It was this one here, now $8.99 so almost a case for $100
