Accomodation in Langkawi - Any Recommendations?

Hi,

Heading to Langkawi for a week in December with the OH and wondering do any OzBargainers have recommendations?

Looking at a budget of around $70-80 per night.

Cheers!

    Well aren't you lucky..

Langkawi is a really nice place.

I stayed at Berjaya last time I went to Langkawi. Call them up directly, ask to speak to Reservations and see if they have anything for $80 per night, they might offer a rainforest chalet for $100 a night, always worth a try. This place was really nice, they have everything you could ever need in the resort. Put in mind that december is the mid season going into the high season so it will get busy so book early, anyway good luck. Check the mystery deals over at asiawebdirect, they are sometimes 1/3 of the price you see on the hotels website, awd also leave certain keywords in the description that make out the hotel and room you're going to get, pay attention to the size/features etc..

I can't tell you where to stay, but I can tell you I was there in April and would not touch the Four Points by Sheraton with a barge pole… We stayed there 4 nights, booked a room for 2 (single) adults and 2 kids, the room had one king bed and a day bed. Room was full of mosquitos, sheets and towels had stains, the place absolutely reeked of sewage and stagnant water and for 5 hours one morning the whole hotel had no running water at all. Plus one of the kids got food poisoning from the buffet breakfast and ended up in hospital.

There were some great looking places along the main strip near the beach.

eXtremist - the Berjaya that cheap?! When I was looking it was all $500 a night!!

I've stayed at the Berjaya, it was fairly cheap, starting from ~$100 a night.

We also upgraded to one of the chalets on the water at the Berjaya for a for a hundred AUD or so once we got there.

You could do worse than look at the listings on tripadvisor, there are hundreds. However I noticed that the ratings are mediocre in comparison to other destinations, I see scores like 5 or 6 when a similar priced place in another country would get 7 or 8.

    We stayed at The Danna.

If you can afford it, go do it, everything about it is excellent. The best hotel I've ever stayed in and for $250-$300 a night I consider it great value.

Even stay for a night or 2 to treat yourself.

We stayed for 4-5 nights last time, and on the last night they upgraded us to a suite- 120sqm in size, lounge room, large balcony, walk in wardrobe bigger than my hotel room in Japan, overlooking the ocean and swimming pool. Fantastic. After leaving we went to KL and stayed in the Shangri-La and felt like we were slumming it! lol

I've also stayed at the Berjaya, it's pleasant enough.

  • Thanks for all the tips guys! Called the Berjaya an no chance in getting a room for $80!

I wouldn't go back to Langkawi. Quite an expensive place and beaches pretty average. Generally overrated - in my opinion only. What brings you to look at Langkawi? What kind of holiday are you trying to have? There may be better destinations depending on what kind of Holiday you desire.

I also wouldn't go back. I thought it was massively overrated. Better beaches elsewhere in asia, better shopping, better food, better places for relaxing. Most of the island is very poor. You can drive around the island easily in a day and I honestly didn't find much of it very touristy. Depends what you're after though!
