iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Applecare Program? Cost of Out-Of-Warranty Service skyrocketing.

Hi Guys,

Anyone who has ever cracked their iPhone screen, or any phone screen would know of the pains which i am talking about. Now onto the money.
Apple's applecare program costs $129 for an iPhone and requires a service fee of $99 for each accidental repair, up to 2.
On the other hand, Out-Of-Warranty (OOW) service costs a staggering $428.95 for the 6 Plus and $388.95 for the iPhone 6.

Doing the maths:

If i never drop my phone, Lose $129
Cracked screen replaced once, Save $200.95 for Plus, Save $160.95 for iPhone 6
Cracked screen replaced twice, Save $530.90 for Plus, Save $450.90 for iPhone 6

Based on a time period of 2 years for which Applecare covers, assuming you do replace your phone with Apple and not elsewhere, and that this is accidental damage which is not covered by the standard warranty. Note that these also include shipping fees if required. Not sure what this means but it costs $20 a hit.

Is it worth?
Thoughts?

Broken Screen? I Have A Defender Case

Comments

  • Depends on what sort of person you are. For the last 12 years I've had phones there has been 2 drops, both resulting in miniscure corner scratches due to having cases. Get a case, don't be a klutz.

  • I am not an apple user but in financial perspective it's worth to have this insurance thing if you cannot repair it yourself.
Most of smartphone users are not smart enough to repair a broken screen

  • it looks worth it today , but dont out of warranty repair costs go down over time for phones ?

  • Should be covered by some home insurance policies too

  • The cost to replace a broken screen is actually less. Under $200 from Apple. The prices you are comparing AppleCare to is for full oow service e.g. dropping the phone into water or something.

The prices i am using are for out of warranty, which is accidental damage. If it was not accidental and the screen died, i would be expecting a free replacement under warranty anyways.

      • Yeah, its in the link you posted, under "My iPhone is not eligible for warranty service. What are my service options?"

        iPhone Screen Repair
Repair and replacement costs depend on your iPhone model and your AppleCare product coverage. Apple will run a diagnostic test to determine whether your iPhone has experienced additional damage. If it has, or if it needs other repairs, you may need to pay an out-of-warranty service fee. Accidental damage isn't covered under the Apple One Year Limited Warranty.

        Model Screen repair service fee
        iPhone 6 A$ 148.95
        iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5 A$ 178.95

My interpretation is that if you crack a screen through an accident, then you pay the above price regardless if it is in warranty or not.
If the screen fails and it is not an accident, and you are outside the 1 year warranty period, statutory warranty should apply imo

Here is the equivalent page from the US:
        https://www.apple.com/support/iphone/repair/screen-damage/
You will see that a cracked screen due to accident costs $109 or $129US there.
If its not the screen, or battery, then 'other' applies

We are not in the US. From experience they will charge the OOW for screen cracks related to accidental drops. Non accidental screen incidents may include swollen battery, perhaps?
