Is 2560x1440 via HDMI possible?

Hi,

I am thinking of buying this monitor (Samsung LS27A850TS, http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/monitors/LS27A850TS/ZA) used for $280.

However, I want to connect it via my laptop which only has an HDMI 1.4 out (no DVI-D).

Will 2560x1440 display on the monitor correctly at the maximum HZ via an HDMI 1.4 cable?

  • I have no idea how you are going to connect the HDMI seeing as there doesn't seem to be any mention of a HDMI slot from the site you linked…

I suppose you can get a HDMI to DVI cable and do the same as the guy here.

  • Cheers.

According to the seller, it has hdmi and dp and dvi. I read a review that the "HDMI port doesn't cope well with interlaced content or judder."

    I've got that cord already.

How do I know if this monitor has a built in scaller?

  • Yes, HDMI 1.4 can carry 2560x1440@60Hz, in fact 1.3 can do it as well.
Whether or not your specific graphics card will allow it, and the monitor support it is another question. I know my dell U2711 can only do 1080p over hdmi, and requires dual-link dvi to do 1440, but it's quite an old monitor

    • My GPU will (it's a new laptop- W230SS with a GTX 860M).

This monitor in question is pretty old, but I can' dig up my information on it. How can I know for certain if the monitor will support 1440 over hdmi?

      • Read the manual on the link you posted above:

In HDMI mode, the maximum resolution is (1920 x 1080).

Will probably work hdmi>dvi if you set a custom res as projectzero suggested

        • Ok that's important- thanks.

SO HDMI is definetly out of the question now.

I just have to 'hope' that HDMI-DVI works…

  • Your laptop will only output what res it supports. If its 1080p, it will output 1080p. That model only outputs 1080p or 3200 x 1800 according here: http://www.affordablelaptops.com.au/contents/en-us/d473_meta….

If the laptop will output 1800p and scale properly to the monitor, ?.

  • Look, it will probably 'work' but you have to ask yourself if you really want to. That graphic card is good for most games in 1080p but once you move to 1440p it will probably make you drop your setting A LOT. Like, if you play on high at 1080p you'll be going to medium at best at 1440p if you want to maintain fps at a playable level (i.e 40+fps). With it being an old monitor, you might want to check what the refresh rate and response times are as well…

Now, if you don't play games on your notebook, it should be fine. Why would you ever go for a 1440p monitor just for windows is beyond me but ppl have their reasons I'm sure.

    • I'm wanting a 1440p screen because I use a lot of photoshop, video editing, web & design software. The more usuable "space" I screen, the better (well, I thinking).

      I'm using a 24" 1080 and coming from a 13.3" 1080- it's a big downgrade. Guess it's the DPI.

Is $280 even that good a deal for the screen?

  • could try contacting Samsung and asking for tech support: http://www.samsung.com/au/info/contactus.html#none

  • HDMI can handle 4K (or 3840 x 2160)…comes down to the video drivers for the HDMI out of your laptop.
