Qld car change over

Have a buyer keen as mustard to buy my car for $30K says cash, have personalised plates that don't go with vehicle, have inspection certificate, nothing owing on vehicle. Never sold a car privately before and wondered what the procedure is in Qld?.

Funds cleared or in the hand
Go to Qld Transport office change plates
Sign over rego
Statement the car is not encumbered in any way.

anything else?.

  • Go and get regular plates yourself transferring them to the car.
Take off your personalised and then sell the car. It's a single trip to Queensland transport.
Sell car with new plates and safety certificate (doesn't matter if rego on certificate is old rego since QT will know about it and VIN will be right).
Fill in disposal form and get your part from buyer. They do the transfer so you need some proof you sold it in case they fail to do it.
    Give receipt for car.
    Done.

  • Usually a bank cheque is fine, I drove with the buyer of my car to the bank and deposited the cheque and then it was theirs.

  • thanks Shonky, I'll do that.

From memory thought a bank cheque takes a few days to clear as there are some crook ones out there.

    • There have been instances of fake bank cheques, yes. Depends on how shifty the buyer seems to you. I recently bought a car with a bank cheque and seller had no qualms at all about it. He had driven it over to my place when I looked at it so did know where I lived.

Other option is to agree to go to the bank with the buyer and get them to do a direct deposit. Fairly difficult to cancel that. Or similar with a bank cheque.

You should sight and probably take a copy of the buyer's licence for some protection and you'll need it for the rego transfer form where you both sign and take part of it each.
