How Much Should a Pool Fence Cost?

Just got a quote for a pool fence which seems to work out at nearly $1000 per metre! Seriously…there's around 5m (maybe 6m) one gate and the quote comes in at a shade under $5000. Looking at eBay, if I buy the panels and DIY it seems I should be able to easily do the job for under $1000.

I guess I'm pretty handy so leaning towards doing it myself…but just interested in whether anyone else has had experience in this area. A friend just got quotes for a fence around $15,000…but he's looking at probably 40m of fencing so that looks under $500 per metre.

Stupid pool regulations…the local kids are still free to go drown themselves at the lake 200m away at the end of the street.

  • Where abouts do you live? We are fencing our entire property, 67m with 1.8m timber lapped fencing and H4 base, which is costing us $4700. :\

    • Bayside Melbourne. We just had a rear fence done at around $100 per metre (2m high fence with fence capping and pool compliant). As it was a boundary fence, the neighbour went halvies with us bringing it down to $50 per metre for us.

The internal pool fence is 2.4m from fence to house pier @ 1.5m high glass and then another 2.6m of 1.2m high glass and a 900mm wide x 1.2m high glass gate down the side of my alfresco area.

  • $1000 a metre would have to be glass at least, and even that's expensive (A glass supplier told me to allow $450 a metre)

Get another quote! or move away from gold plated fences.

    • Yeah. Maybe they've got some of that glass left over from the Eureka tower with the gold in it that they're trying to flog me.

  • I seen bunnings sell already made glass fence and it's fairly cheap. Anyone has installed it themselves ?

Spoke to my site manager…he reckons $5k is a ripoff too. He's given me another number to ring and expects that $450 per metre is a far more usual number.

Just to follow up on this. I got all my glass pool fence needs at OxWorks down in Hallam/Dandy South. Cheaper than Bunnings and better quality (I think). Lashed out for the highest quality hinges and latch. All up it cost me $1400 in materials and $0 in labour. Super easy to do. However with the new pool regs - I think they force you into spending big $$$ hiring someone to draw up specs, produce reports, sign documents in blood before they're allowed to even think about building anything vertical near a body of water.
