Onix $50 at Aldi this Saturday 4/10/14

have a 2g phone
like to have a simple cheap smartphone on 3g
can't see the specs of this anywhere
related reviews of aldi phones were poor.

don't want to spend too much money while I learn how to use a phone on 3g
only to replace it with 4g some time later.

suggestions welcome with specs and prices.

Onix Phone? Was it this - http://ausdroid.net/2014/03/21/aldi-to-launch-new-onix-andro…

With smartphones you're going to get what you pay for. There are not many phones you can buy for less than $100 and they tend to be fairly low-spec (prone to freeze / lag / force closing due to lack of RAM or CPU power).

    Some options you could consider

    Nokia Lumia 520
    Huawei Ascend Y300 / Y320 alt
Sony Xperia E1 not to be confused with older Xperia E.

      put link there now.
will check out these ones and wait for an ozbargain

      • Based on your link - the Onix phone doesn't seem like a smart phone (although it does offer 3G)

I'd go with what Scrimshaw said… get a budget smartphone around $100 (probably a Windows phone (like Nokia Lumia series) as they are simple yet less resource hungry unlike Android.

Edit: Double checking the link you have provided… doesn't say anything about 3G.
Are you sure its a 3G phone?

Might want to note which 3G network you’re going to use. Some Nokia 520’s are 900mhz, some are 850mhz.

900mhz - Optus type network (including Virgin)

850mhz - Telstra type networks (including Voda)]

this does not show in the thread?

not sure how to evaluate it in sydney.
does this matter in the city which might have enough coverage whatever network?

are you suggesting that the nokia might be the best buy of the 3, sir?

There are some rather inconsistent comments about the 3g spec of these lumias

but going by https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/163922#comment-2283368 I would say there is a likelihood that the Nokia sold in Australia is either 900mhz or 850mhz. Check the model number on the box prior to purchase.

and your 3G access will vary depending on which network you are with, so please check your Telco's website for 3G coverage maps.

And as far as reviews go its one of the best windows phones you can get for the money, If you prefer the Google ecosystem (its a well known fact that Android has more choices in it's app market than Windows Phone) then you should probably consider buying an Android device. Or maybe you want something with a simple UI, has free offline GPS navigation (Nokia Here Maps) or perhaps you like to use Microsoft's mail, Skype or Xbox Music/Video services, then get the Lumia.

Another thing about Android is that cheap sub $100 Android devices generally don't run as smoothly as a similarly priced Windows device. IMO Windows is usually more smartphone beginner friendly.

          thank you.
as a newbie and non tech guy
older and unable to assimilate tech
          this sounds good.

found some androids hard to use.

will look for a good windows fone
as simple UI is less confusing
          as i get older
and no longer can figure these gadgets so quickly.

          offline gps is excellent
would use it mainly to find bargains on the fly
or places i need to be at easily

i get by with the laptop
          and a plan
          not a fan
          of paying for mobile broadband.
