Why did you randomly post about a news.com.au then post a link to a website that is irrelevant, is that your site?

What do you mean by "posted a link to a website that's irrelevant"? I posted a link to news.com.au.
I'm new to this community and I thought there were some good money savings tips and it's something Ozbargain community might find timely and useful. I have nothing to do with the news site.

Forget the ridiculous mortgage for an overpriced pile of bricks.

Tell it to the Sydney baby boomers who bought their houses for 10-20K and are selling close to a mil.

I knew a guy in the 80s who took this advice in the 70s , he was already kicking himself then. Probably topped himself by now.

I bought my house 10 years ago. Now the mortgage is much less than rent would be. The key is rent goes up, wages go up, the amount you owe goes down.

This ain't the 80s you stooge. Wrong century. Buying now is retarded.

Seriously is a personal attack your best comeback.

btw. It's not considered politically correct to call something retarded these days.

In fact your use of language would be more likely to warrant the comment 'This ain't the 80s'.

Why not go further, sleep under the bridge, screw paying rent. Go dumpster diving for free stuff and trade with other hobos. Hang around food court bins. Life's great right?

Yeah we get the point and truly respect your perspective but your mortgage bashing/rant is getting a bit rancid and stale.

Gutting insurance is penny wise pound foolish.

You could save $30 a month but let's say your car gets stolen, or you hit a Porsche.

I'm glad I didn't read this post 12 years ago about forgetting the ridiculous mortgage, Next year I'll be mortgage free, while you will be paying rent.

Rent and be free!!!!!! Free from what?????? Free from rent increase, free from rent inspections, free from having to pack up and move when owner wishes to sell.

Not the worst advice I've ever read, but it's up there.

Getting insurance is one thing, getting the appropriate level of coverage against your risks is another i.e. drive a $5k car and spend $1k on comprehensive or drive a $30k car that you bought outright with cashola but only getting 3rd party fire and theft but ended up smashing into a pole…

There are better tips from Lifehacker to be honest. Finance tips from a news site? Old, tired and mainstream.

The main problem I think us Ozbargainers all share is impulse purchasing. How do you keep this in check?
Keep a wish list of your most wanted items and order them from most important to least. Only buy the item that is the on the very top. You'll be surprised to see how often you really want something now but a few weeks later on you'll even wonder why you wanted to buy it in the first place.
